I have a 13yr old gelding (Red) who was gelded about 10 years ago.

For the last 2-3 years he and the other geldings has been seperated from the mares due to the large volume of horses, he has however lived with mares previously without any problems.

I have moved him to a small yard where mares and geldings are turned out together, he has been there about 3 weeks. He is currently turned out with 5 mares and 2 other geldings. Just recently one of the mares came into season and Red has started mounting her, he isnt entering her or being agressive, he is just standing there and she is letting him do it.

Could this be a one off because:-

1. he is back out with mares again after such a long time? and
2. he is at a new yard and still settling down?

I'm hoping this is a one off and he will snap out of it, i couldn't bear it if he has to be seperated because he cant live alone and becomes inseperable if he lives with only one other horse.....is this normal behaviour and is he likely to snap out of it? Is there an injection he can have?

He hasnt shown any interest in any of the other mares

As said he has never been like this before

I'm concerned that the owner of the mare is not going to appreciate her mare being mounted. At the moment she is ok, saying its because he is new, but i'm new to the yard and i dont want this to turn into a major problem.

Red will stay away from the other bullish mares, so im not concerned that he would even dare mount them, they would kick him to the other side of the field!

He is not a confrontational horse, if he gets kicked he wont kick back he just runs off!

Its just this one he has taken a liking to.

I would be  if a horse started mounting mine! I think it might be a combination of the two things, hopefully when he realises that its not that exciting he will settle down. But in the mean time, I think the risks of him damaging her (or her him!) are pretty high, can you seperate them while she's in season?

We had our pony rig tested (negative) as he is just so hormonal. Kicking and squealing at horses today at a show - he is 25!!

She will probably be having her last season of the year, by next spring he hopefully will be more settled and he will have lost interest in her.

Its just so wiered the way he goes about it, its completely silent, no squealing, kicking or biting. One minute he is eating quietly, the next she is giving him a piggy back!

My pony was once in a field with 4 other geldings but had 2 mares in a little starvation paddock in the same field. The electric tape fell down one day so the 2 mares joined the boys for the day. The old mare went off with one of the geldings while the other 4 boys including mine stayed with the mare who was in season. When I arrived to find them the 4 boys were taking it in turns to mount her!!

My pony was mounting one of the mares this summer who was in season, with all his equipment working apparently, he couldn't reach as she is bigger, I did ask if maybe a stool could be put in the field to help him reach , I didn't see it myself, might have been a rumour......

Cant see it being a problem unless injuries are occurring, like cuts on the mares back from shoes/nails type thing or kicking, maybe a condom machine for them if STD's are a worry......
