Hi all,

sorry to post piccy here but I wondered if you could give me your opinion on Fly's hackamore. Is it too low? The cheek pieces are too big so will invest in some cob size ones as being on the top hole has pulled the headpiece forward. Thanks guys.xx

too low and too loose, you have a light contact and look how far the cheeks have swung around.

I am a bit scared to pull it in a hole at present. Do you really think it is too loose? How many fingers should i be able to get between his jaw and strap? He's only had it on for 3 days and so far so good. I think it may of swung round because of the cheek pieces. To be honest I have not had much experience with them so value any advice. xx

I managed to get some Collegiate cheekpieces that are about 6'' long for my hackamore- they were labelled 'gag cheeks', and cost £8.99.

It is useful to have shorter cheekpieces as it can pull around and potentially go into the horses eye- this could also happen if it aint tight enough around the horses face.
Sol has a full size headpiece on his hackamore bridle but with the 'special' short cheeks.

When the hackamore is on Solo, I *think* it's about a hands width (5'')from his nostrils.
I padded the jaw strap out with vetrap as mine has a chain at the back- I find just having the chain on Sols is a bit too severe.
I can fit 3 fingers (flat) between his jaw and the jaw strap.
I tend to have it a bit looser if I'm just slopping about but if I'm going to be having a canter or am jumping it gets tightened up.

I will take a pic of Sol wearing his tomorrow and PM you it, hope this helps you a bit!

Ok, well if you bring it up a few holes then it will probably be snugger around his nose, ATM its doing naff all! No leverage and steering is maybe a bit wishy washy? The nose and muzzle area is so sensitive you dont want the curb strap to rub if its moving alot.

Here you go, higher and snugger. Does that help a little ?

Yep loads. Thanks. God, I have been feeble. I need to bring it "in" a good couple of inches and raise it by at least 2 inches. Thanks for that. Wondered about it today when I put pressure on to stop and he just went all "rollkur" on me! xx

Thank you - much appreciated. xx

A hackamore should be fitted the same way that you would fit a traditional caveson noseband or a lunge caveson. Two figers below the protruding cheek bone or it may rub, the back strap should be relatively loose and should not have a firm contact on the jaw bone unless a firm contact is taken on the reins, hackamores can be very severe if not fitted correctly. The cheek pieces should lie as they would with a bit bridle otherwise when you take up contact the rotation of the hackamore cheeks can push the bridle into the horses eyes, so some adjustment may also be needed on the front strap, depending on what it looks like now you have adjusted it.
I grew up riding in hackamores, so they are second nature to me.

thanks benmilo, I know what you mean about the cheek pieces and I also recognise that mine are too long! Thank you so much for your advice, i am sure fly will appreciate it! I am very wary of their severity and do try to use my seat to stop or check Fly, thanks again. xx
