My boy pulled a shoe off on sunday in the middle of his xc round  the shoe twisted round and then he stood on it but no nails went into his hoof one just skimmed the hoof (he bent it) and took a small dent out (like the farriers do when they shoe them, scrape all the old hoof away with that tool thingy - yeah thats totally what they are called :D) he obviously went lame, i lept off athleticly :p and extracted said shoe from said hoof and sadly :( walked him back to the box park - he was jumping fantasically until then!!

anyway no farrier at competition  so boxed him up and came home, my farrier came out following day to put the shoe back on, he was foot sore on hard surfaces but sound on grass (he was put out that eve, as he box walks manically if in on his own)

farrier couldnt find any puncture marks from the shoe, no heat or anything sisnter and said he's probably just foot sore as he's not used to having no shoes on and he is the worlds biggest baby when it comes to pain!!! (he's known to hang his leg in the air and looks extremely sad and innocent... but in fairness he did have an infection that time!!) so he wacked the shoe back on told me to give him a bute that eve and chuck him back out, i did and that was monday eve.... he's still lame in trot like barely 1/10th and only when you turn him in tight circles and then trot him off, theres no heat in the foot what so ever, no swelling anywhere else in the leg, i havnt ridden him yet as well he's not sound!! and he's meant to be dressaging on saturday!!!! grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

so what shall i do??

a) call farrier back out, he will probably take the shoe back off, poultice him even thou theres no heat and then wack the shoe back on in a weeks time - its my horses horrible boxed foot that he's pulled it off from, and generally he never has much to nail the shoes to, so i dont want the shoe taken off and on and off and on if it can be helped - if this is what he needs then fine :)

b) call the vet..... theres no swelling or heat at all so probably a tad pointless

c) ride him... he's not hopping lame (i dont really want to do this, but if i write it u guys can all think im a horrid rubbishy owner and laugh... or report me! :D :D :D)

d) leave him, he's out 24/7 and wait and see when he comes sound, whilst also telling him to stop being a big baby it really doesnt hurt that much! :p

so go on what would you do??

The shoe may have bruised his foot if the shoe was twisted,or it may have tweaked the hoofwall(grab your thumbnail and give it a yank) This too would have caused bruising.
Like us,it depends on the severity of the bruise as to how long it takes to stop hurting. With horses bruising can lead to infection so watch out for symptoms getting worse.

Movement is beneficial so turnout and even gentle exercise on a forgiving surface will aid recovery, although I would rather have a vet check to make sure there is nothing else going on before riding or lungeing.

Sounds like although the nail didn't actually pierce the sole, it may have bruised it. I'd turn him out for a couple of days and see what he's like then.

One of mine did same. Came in with a shoe that had shifted over last sunday, farrier came to take it off but it had bruised, he was very lame. Put shoe back on and was a bit better but still not 100%. Bute for 2 days then 3 days of arnica tablets. Was sound again by the following friday.

thanks for your replies, i figured he was probably just bruised and yes im well aware of how much it hurts when nails are involved!!! owie  its ok ill just carry on calling him a big baby and let him have the benefit of the doubt!!! if he keeps this up thou the lazy oaf will have to be withdrawn from dressage, im not harsh enough to ride him in 2 dressage tests when he's hardly been ridden all week! also i was only going for experience so theres always another time to gain that :)

good im glad it was nothing sinister :) my boy seems happy in himself, so ill just keep feeding him apples until he's sound again, although im sure he's jealous of his hacking buddy careering around stubble fields! see that should be an incentive in itself :p nah im sure he will be fine :)
