Or am I missing something more sinister? He eats carelessly, with his mouth open a lot of the time and food falls out. He is not quidding as in he does not store food in his cheeks and he's not spitting it out, food falls out of his open mouth. I've just been thinking lately is he messy or is there a reason I dont know about. Any reassurance that he has no table manners greatly appreciated.

How old is he? older horses can often develop dental problems which means they drop a lot of food. My 23 yr old has a tooth missing and has to have her hard feed as a mash or she spills most of it over the floor, (although she does enjoy hoovering it up afterwards)

Mine does this, and it's just that he's messy. His teeth are done every 6 months, and he's never had a problem with them, despite being 29 ;) He's just a slob :D

Oops. Forgot to mention he has his teeth done regularly, the last dentist visit was April. The dentist is very good and has been treating him for a few years and would have told me if anything was wrong or if he needed an extraction or anything. He's about 17 now (horse, not dentist!).

Shy's a messy eater when fed anything chaff-ish - most of his Healthy Hooves used to land on the floor, and his teeth are checked every six months....

So I abandoned chaff-ish feeds, and now he just gets a balancer on it's own, and the whole lot goes in and stays in, and his bucket is licked forever ;)

Mine is a very messy eater, when i first got him i got the dentist straight out whiosaid there was nothing wrong with his teeth and hes just greedy ;)

The vet said the same when he choked one time, again nothing wrong with him, just a greedy pig (although pig wasnt the word he used rofl), he loves his food and tries to cram as much into his mouth as he can, which then goes everywhere when he tries to chew it

Had this with our boy Basil, he seemed to drop so much food, had our equine dentist look at him and the said that his teeth were so bad it was likely they had not been done for many years. (we hadn't owned him that long at the time)

My horse did this until she was 14, saw various dentists and vets no one said anything, I had her teeth done by my vet (who I didn't think was very good once he'd been) she went out on loan and the woman got her vet to do them a week later. He diagnosed Diastema which she had had all her life and no one had noticed or known what it was and she went to the Dick Vet for specialist treatment and never dropped food again...
