Is my horse lame?

My horse injured his knee a few years ago and seemed to have healed fine. However in cold weather he was stiff. If I felt it and squeezed it, he didn't seem bothered. But he won't go faster than a trot. Recently after unloading him from the trailer he started limping. It's been three days and he's still limping. What can I do to check him? Do I need a vet?

Sounds like he might have aggravated something. Ask the vet to come out and give you a lameness examination and then when you get a diagnosis you can go from there. For peace of mind if he were my horse I'd hack him out in the Westropp brushing and knee boot in one, so if ever he goes down on the road his knees are cushioned. I never hack my horse anywhere without him wearing them.

Pressing and squeezing an arthritic leg won't do much to highlight pain, but if you flexed his leg and then asked him to walk it would probably show up more.

As a rule Id say if you need to ask then call a vet. Not in a nasty way but even with my own horses if I'm confident in my own knowledge then fine but if I had to question it on here then I'd call the vet.
Hope he's ok and has just banged it or something simple. :)
