I can honestly say that my mare thinks the world of me. I don't get the same feeling from my gelding, despite owning him longer. I love them both the same of course, but I think my mare loves/likes/feels I am important (whatever feelings horses emote).
I can't even describe it, but everyone says that the way she watches me, even when these loads of people about, her eyes are just lit up on me. If I have had the rare evening off, the next day is like something out of a movie and we genuinely have a huge reunion with cuddles, hair sniffing, whinnying.
Interestingly, this is my second Mare (the rest have all been geldings) and I bond so much better with mares. I just love being around them and riding them, I feel they give me so much more of themselves than the boys ever have. My other mare was a proper grumpy mare, but we were like two halves of the same person, it was bizarre. We just understood each other and although we didn't have the same cuddly relationship that I have with current mare, we just had this amazing feeling that we belonged to each other. Very strange.
I know my gelding likes and trusts me because I am the only person he will allow on his back. He is now getting better with other people handling him, but he only every lets his guard down fully around me.
I am the sole carer though, I wonder if this makes a difference. I have, usually, one evening off a year, but I don't go away or have days off from doing them, so I am very much a constant in their life.
