My horse can be a right neigher when he is out and about showing but he has found a new voice.
For the last month every time i go to him in his field or stable (morning or evening) he makes a small grumbly noise .... the easiest way to explain it is - The Simpson, Sideshow Bob, every he kept stepping on the brooms and they would hit him in the face... if you have ever seen that episode...

Does anyone else horse do this?
I like to think he is saying helllloooo :)

Does anyone know what types of neighs mean???
Thanks

My mare yells 'morning' at me when I go up first thing - then carries on eating. The gelding has a much softer neigh which generally means hey mum, how you doing, breakfast ready? and he tends to bumble over to see me at the same time. They grumble away between the 2 of them which always makes me giggle - like an old married couple squabbling!

One of mine neighs in the morning at 8 if I haven't been to see him and again at 3.
I am sure he thinks that I need reminding to see him . Also as soon as I shut my garden Gate he neighs even though he can't see us .

When I turn up with horses' feeds, my mare greets me with a wuh huh huh, to which I reply wuh huh huh, to which she replies wuh huh huh .... and you can keep this going for a while (or at least until she gets her bucket!)

My boy is very chatty! He's the most vocal horse I've known :D but they are mostly loud, demanding squeals. One lady at the yard recently commented how 'demanding' he is with his shouting :D I think it is very cute. Sometimes it can be a gentler neigh but demanding is how you would generally describe him, anyway

My old boy used to let the yard staff I was on my way because he would give a loud whinny when he heard my car at the top of the lane. When I got out of the car I would shout 'helloooo gorgeous' across the yard and he'd whinny again. The first time the yard farrier heard me shout to my boy he thought I was referring to him - poor deluded soul :D

I had a little Exmoor pony here on loan from a friend who was quite vocal, I got used to hearing "hee hee hee hee" from her in a very high-pitched squeaky sort of tone.

My Welsh D mare is more a deep throated "faw faw faw faw"; coblet has a very strange "voice", more like the grinding sound of a poorly washing machine....... "waaarrrgghhhh" - not ever heard anything like him TBH.

One of my minis always nickers as soon as she hears my voice, if she up the field and I call them she always answers and if she is in the field by the house and she can hear me talking through an open window inside the house she will nicker or call. Bless her.

I'm convinced they do - I went to visit my mare at horsepital - 8 days starvation and she saw me through a window and I was getting out of the car and she called and called I'm here I'm here...and on the morning she died and was in so much pain she moaned and called to me and struggled to get on her feet - heartbreaking noises. Of course there was all the normal usual chatting - feed me now, hello where have you been..that sort of thing.
