My chestnut has lots of white hairs coming through as he moults, he has a couple of white spots on his body (I don't know if this is significant) the new coat coming through on his flanks is a bit roan looking and his tail has sprouted some white hairs

Is this normal for chestnuts? I'm wondering if the summer coat will be lighter and the white hairs will blend in or whether he is going to go roan

He was two earlier this month

Sorry about the small pics, I resized them a bit enthusiastically!

He's showing rabicano. My chestnut has rabicano and has shown a little more white every year. Google Swwalesmoor Brenin Aur or Swalesmoor Tango to see my pony's sire and full brother, both showing rabicano! Would link pics but my computer is not playing :p

Thank you all.

Sychnant those two horses look amazing! I have obviously seen horses with similar coats but didn't realise there was a name for it or that it could develop over time.

My boy's dam is a very interesting colour but she isn't like that and his sire is plain chestnut so I wonder where its coming from!

His dam is Stoak Topaz and on looking at her again she does have white flecks http://www.stoakstud.co.uk/page2.html

His sire is Doylan Figurehead

Ah right, ill ask my friend shes a wizz kid on section b's

This is her section b mare thats changing into a roan, i cant remember which one but she said one of the stallions was roan, she owns Laithehill Jazz and i think she said it could possibly be on his side of the breeding, jazz has small white hairs around his hip on one side, but its never grown. Im meeting her tonight so ill ask if i can take some photos to show you :)

My grey was born chestnut and turned roan then grey (without nice dapples) and then in old age is lightly flea bitten grey. I cannot remember at what age she turned roan but fairly sure it was much earlier than 2.

we have gelding out of Stoak Topaz too! he is an unusual colour also, hes grey but pearlescent in summer its very eye catching! :)

why rabicano over sabino?

You have to be careful how you use the word 'roan' to describe horse colour as there is the true Roan colour (caused by the roan gene) and white flecking or 'roaning' caused by other genes. For example the grey mentioned above was never a 'roan', she greyed out and it was the grey, not roan causing the white flecks in the coat. Sabino and rabicano also cause white flecks in the coat, but again, this is different from a true dark headed roan with the roan gene.
