Thought I ought to update you on little Gizmo and how he is doing (sorry, should of been done sooner but......).
We found the perfect horse that suits me and my mum, Toby!
As soon as we turned them out together, there was no more than a few squeals and that was that, they are now buddies!
Gizmo is doing much better; my little cousin even took him to a show on Sunday (her first show!) where he was really happy all day and she even won a few rosettes which was a bonus...
I cannot thank you all enough for your advice and suggestions! You will be happy to know that Gizzy is now much happier, even though Toby seems to be the boss in the field! Looks like the only problem we will have now is a little bit of separation anxiety when we take one away from the other!! For 21 years old, he isnt looking bad, bless!
Attached is a few links to pictures so you can put horse heads to the names...
Thank you all, again!
Re the separation anxiety - with a bit of patience and planning that will get better. When my young horse lost her old companion and we introduced her to her new 'nanny' we made a point of taking both of them out separately every day, firstly for a short time then gradually getting longer. After a while it was part of the routine, you could almost see them thinking 'we come in, I go out, I come back, she goes out, she comes back, then we both go into the field together' if that doesn't seem too fanciful! Just take it slowly and understandingly and they will be fine.
Thanks so much for the update and photos, I love a happy ending!!! Sometimes, we don't realise that animals grieve the same as humans and it is difficult to know what to do for the best...
