She's a Welsh Sec A, stands at 11.2hh and is 11 years old. I know she needs muscle but as I haven't backed her yet all her exercise is inhand atm

I show her and I keep being told she needs more weight - tbh I'm happy with her as she is (apart from wanting more muscle on her) but I'm curious what other people think. A lot of people seem to like seeing ponies fat

She isn't a good doer - she's on ad lib haylage and has 1 scoop Alfa A Oil and a full measure of Bailey's Lo-Cal every day (plus grass from 24hr turnout). She did get a little light last month

she was getting stressed with all the showing and increased workload but I gave her nearly a month off and she's chilled out again

my pet hate is judges that want to see overweight horses, she is looking fantastic and i wouldn't want to see any more weight on her muscle yes in time but weight no

She looks on the better side of perfect if anything

But, you can see how in a section A class she would look small, but TBH I think that may just be her type?

Thanks people

When we started showing last year we were regularly placed and the ponies all look fab - this year 90% of them are fat

I was at a show last week and the judge told me she needs to put on 50kg and she should have a gutter on her rump

Erm.... yeah is I want her to get lami in 12 months

She's my first pony

I've only had TB types before and there is a big difference between the two

Dreadfully thin, clearly not looking after her.

Send her to me..........I insist

If you'd said that last month I'd have popped her in the post no problem but she's being a sweetie atm so I'm keeping her

It's really easy to turn her into a cow again - she's an ex broodmare and as soon as she sees a foal she goes NUTS!! She totally flipped out last time
crazy.gif
I could only just hold on to her
blush.gif
It was the last straw that prompted her time off

YO (her old owner) has her son for sale....

She may be an A but looks more like a B in the photos. Lovely amount of weight. You need to be congratulated as too many people have them looking like barrels on legs.

Hi

Firstly can I just say that I am really pleased that you are concerned, I think a lot of owners allow their horses to be and remain far too skinny, or far too fat which is also bad as you pointed out!

I would say she does need some muscle, but you've explained that anyway, she may need to put on a little weight to be able to do that though.

I think you are doing all the right things, just get her teeth checked and with the sugar levels in the grass increasing now she'll be perfect soon.

Have fun with her, she looks great.

This kind of thing really annoys me. She looks perfect and this time of year thats no mean feat with a sec a. If the judges dont like her like that then sod them! Muscle yes, bulk through fat no.

She looks perfect. And the next judge that tells you the pony needs more condition - challenge them about it. Tell them you understood that judges were being encouraged to look at the 'leaner' animal more favourably. And were they aware of the risk of laminitis for the overweight pony.

Bloomin muppetts!

I think she's a really good weight, but possibly needs a little more covering over the ribs as I suspect you can probably faintly see them when she moves which is not desirable in the show ring.

My mare is the correct weight for something that's had laminitis and now is too thin to show as you can see her ribs when she moves, it's a shame the showing world still prefers horses to be on the podgy side

No, definitely not!

Keep her at that weight, add more muscle, but NO more fat!!!

Well done, lovely pony BTW

ditto this, i cant understand a judges obsession with obese horses.

I would say for showing its her type thats a little lighter than the norm, I dont think there are many fat ponies on the circuit this season not at the shows i've been to anyway. There is always 20+ sec d's in the classes we do and in general they are well covered but i have only seen 2 that are looking fat and they were easy to spot because they were fat.

Thanks guys
smile.gif
I shall tell her I can't fatten her up on polos
wink.gif
I've got pics every month from the month I bought her right up to this month and she's always been a bit on the light side - it seems to be how she is. Hopefully when we get her into ridden classes it won't matter so much
smile.gif

She looks perfect!! Judges have a thing about FAT ponies! If I had a pony and was told by a judge it was too thin, I would say I don't want her any fatter as then she could gat Lami!! Normally makes them re-think what they are insisting!!!

she looks lovely!! You have done a great job!
