hi ya all,
right my little terrier has been in season for a few week now, all the time she has been huge and leaking and my mums collie x has been harrasing her but my german shepard x lab hasn't, anyway during this time my mums dog got with her and was stuck togther, i straight away phone vet to see what could be done and was told she needed 2 injections costing roughly £60 or she has the pups, i have since found a vet who'll do it for around £40 (injections to be given after season has ended). anyway in the last few days she has stopped leaking and she isn't swollen any more but now my dog has started harassing her.
does anyone know at what point in time can they get pregnant?
is it during the season or now?

i just dont really want to spend all that money if she isn't even pregnant, but neither do i want her to have pups with a collie x as i do think the pups will be too big for her and it would be her first litter, besides not sure about the combination of wired haired terrier x collie/ spaniel.


also i know its my fault for taking my eyes off them for 2 mins (i only nipped to loo!!!!!) but does any one else find it hard to accept that the rspca are doing all they can to stop unwanted pups, but to deal with accidents is so expensive and to get the dogs done (which he is nowing having done lol) is £80 plus and the bitch is well over £100

, if they made these things cheaper (and i do mean for working people not just people on benifts) then there would be less unwanted pups etc.

rant over but any advise on situation please let me know.
dog booked in thursday morn for chop and bitch may be going at same time for first of jabs so please reply asap

she could well be pregnant, and even if you did let her have the pups -it would cost you a hell of a lot more than the £60 for the injections just in food let alone the vet checks and any possible complications. i would rather be safe than sorry.
 
When a bitch has a season there is colour in norm discharge until around day 9-11, then the colour fades out almost completely and there is a 4-7 day period where the bitch is ready for mating and will stand for males. After this period of time the colour comes back, although not to it's full and that is theoretically when she's not longer ready, however this doesn't mean to say that she wont be receptable and its always best to keep entire males away from bitches for the entire season. Unless of course you're deliberately breeding.

It sounds like she has a very good chance that she will be pregnant because they have tied and it is at that point in a mating that a bitch draws up most of the sperm. Slip matings (ones without a tie) can still produce puppies but not as likely.

If I were you and didn't want pups, espc. crosses/mixes, I'd go for an injection sooner rather than later. I understand that it's a lot of money if there's the chance that she might not be, but there is that greater chance that she is seeing as they've tied. Do it now before it's too late to act on it. Echo Live_Wire, better safe than sorry.

The other alternative that some vets will do if you never want to breed from her is to have her spayed asap, obviously this would destroy any pups too and is not that pleasant.

The injection also is causing her to abort any foetuses.
 
Yep, I would go for the spay which you can get done about 4 weeks after she is caught..........I do agree that they make these things costly and those on benefits do actually get all the benefits.
However if she is a small terrier and the dog that caught her is considerably bigger.........this could result in her needing a C- section, in which case is very expensive in between £200-£400 depending upon complications and of course the risk to her life.

Actually I would recommend my clients to either get the injections or to book the dog in at 4 weeks for speying!
There are things you need to be aware of using the injections. The injections firstly will extend the season and so you will need to be extra vigilant that no more accidents occur as I wouldn't recommend a 2nd course if it did. Also if your dog is elderly there is a risk of causing a condition called pyometra. This is a serious infection in the womb which is treatable by ovariohysterectomy (speying) - the difference being doing a spey in a sick animal instead of a healthy one. The risk is quite low in young bitches (quoted by the manufacturers of the injection as 7%) but the older the animal is the higher the risk becomes and I personally would be extremely cautious in using it in an older animal.
If the bitch is not destined for breeding then speying is probably the best option as it will prevent you having to go through this ever again! 4 weeks is the usual time to do it. Ideally we prefer to spey midway between 2 seasons as there is a much reduced blood supply to the uterus at this point and so much less chance of bleeding during surgery. Obviously if the bitch has been caught then this needs to be done sooner. Believe me they are no bigger then the size of my finger nail at this stage - the bumps that can be felt in mums tum are mostly placenta with a tiny blob 'pup' attached to it. The reason we do the op at this time is because it is the safest time to do it. ie the bitch is out of season and the embryos haven't developed too far by this stage.
My advice is to speak to your vet when you take her in for the injections and discuss the pros and cons re injections vs op and decide from there.

thanks for info,
taking fagan my terrier to vets tomorrow for injection. i dont really want these puppies which makes me feal awful but i'm frightened that because of the cross they are i could end up having to keep more than one of them and i already have 5 dogs, however i dont want her spayed as i would like to breed her eventually but with another terrier and when she is a little older as she is only 2 next week.
it was never really about the money but more whats best for her and i dont think having the pups is right this time, i was just having a rant as i do think things are expensive for working people, my partners sister are on child benfits for they kiddys and both of them have had free micro chipping and free spayeds or castrations of their dogs, so had his dad as he is on a pension, we are on a low wage but apparnely not low enough so we have to pay for everything in full, how is this fair? and its no wonder people dont want to work these days as you get more privlidges when you dont.
