Is posting a pic of your horse an advert in your eyes?

Just escaped from breeding where as usual a few disagreements are ongoing (these days the hunting forum is tame in comparison believe me!)
One person has said that posting pics of a stallion's foals or the stallion constitutes advertising.
Now I hold my hand up, our stallion is also one of our competition horses so many a time I have posted a link to my blog with his pics on, not to advertise as we rarely stand him at stud, but because I enjoy reading people are pleased for us when he succeeds. There are also lots of pics of youngstock but also many of the retired horses too, I tend to consider them just pretty pics..

Honest opinion, should I stop doing it from now on, as I thought people enjoyed my blog, and if it's considered advertising by some then perhaps I should cease.
If this constitutes advertising, then tell me and I will stop..

To me it is just a proud horse owner showing off their horses.

to me, no it isn't advertising, and I don't think there is anything wrong with it. Jealousy comes to mind tbh!!! Don't stop posting photos of the lovely chocolate....

Can't quite see how anyone would see it as advertising, if H&H thought it was why would they put room for a web link? You haven't got photos of the horses on your posts or mention of stud fees or that one of the horses in the piccies is for sale the only way anyone would know what you do is to click the link, i would carry on. I like to see the piccies of everyones horses on the posts, it would be a shame if it wasn't allowed.

Techinically my sig is advertising arlington court but in a world where technicalities are increasingly being used its nice to be able to be on here without worrying about it.

He's your horse, we're all talking about our horses/ horses we know. Its not like you saying "he stands here, for a fee of £***) knowning a horse exists doesn't mean you'll use it.

What I don't understand is just why people care whether or not anyone is advertising

It is silly to think it is advertising imo.
If you had posted saying 'My stallion who is currently at stud at XXX farm for £sum' then I would class it as advertising but you are not you are posting pictures of your horses like everyone else on here just because he is a stallion doe not mean you are posting to advertise him. Especially as you say he rarely stands at stud.
Ignore them I would say it would be jealously.

Every sinlge pic on here could be constituted as advertising really, after all, I post a pic of my mare jumping then say she's for sale - its not rocket science.
If you are clever you'll know how to make sure it doesn't look like advertising (even if it is)

Well, I suppose some could argue that it is good PR to post pics of horses which stand at stud and/or those for sale. Generally I don't mind if it is an existing HHO member who happens to have something to sell (and is relatively subtle).
I do hit the button though when you get new members posting things like 'Jo Bloggs Saddlery now open!' as it is so intrusive, and against the spirit of things.
Oh, and anyone interested in my black Tb mare?

It's always lovely to see your happy horses and I can't think people see it as advertising. Anyway, so many of the pics are of the golden oldies and you have often said that you are closed to new arrivals in that department.

I guess (I haven't been to see recently) that the fuss is over the gorgeous H Tobago? Knowing what he means to Kate, and how he keeps her going, I cannot understand why people have to be so small minded! She's a one stallion owner who adores her horse which has happened by her good taste and judgement to be a star. And as for his foals - such beautiful characterful animals are a joy to see.

IMHO, and I don't get over there that often, there are other people who are much more blatently advertising their services or stallions.


I do object to the people who only ever post about their product (tracking devices spring to mind) but someone taking pride in their animals - no.

Just for the sake of it - because I'm so proud - this is our big mare jumping her first competitive round since she was so nearly pts after injury last October. She was an absolute star and SHE IS NOT FOR SALE!

LOL!! I love reading your blog and I love seeing the foals etc and would hate anyone to stop posting them because I see it as advertising!

My feeling is this. Breeders post their foals, or stallions foals and links to their stallion sites etc.

If it means one person sees it from the forum and contacts you with a view to buy then essentially it has been advertised via the forum. Even if it just to buy semen!

It is no different to the "I need to loan my horse", "how much" posts and "what do you think of my ad?" posts. They are often followed with "I have PMd you"

Then lo and behold the horse goes to a forum member. Not always but in some cases.

I actually have no problem with it at all, but just felt that it needed to be said that if it results in possible financial gain for the poster then IMO it has to be seen as advertising.

I guess you have to ask yourself this. Have you sold a horse via the forum? Have you had interest shown via the forum?

I only posted the comment because it was being said it wasnt advertising, but if it promotes business in any way then it is. Even if it isnt meant in that way.

Personally, though, I wouldnt worry about it!

I enjoy your blog pages! I enjoyed hearing about William and your other horses.

But the bottom line is if you promote your horses on here and are intending to sell them then it could be deemed advertising.

It is just the way I see it!

i love seeing pics and dont see whats wrong with it, advert or not, i dont have a mare lol, so is deffo not an advert for me, just great pics. What annoys me is constant barage(all the time) of 'this/these are/ is the best stallion/stallions in the whole wideworld(blatant promoting)!' To me your just a very proud (rightly so) owner/breeder!

I must admit I thought twice this morning after reading the replies, this all stems from the breeding forum where lately it seems more ferocious than normal..
I have sold a couple of youngsters via enquiries off here over the years, but nowadays I find people email or ring me from word of mouth, which is how most sell. (for instance as one member will confirm, she asked me an hour ago about replacing her retired horse who lives with me with a youngster, so despite being done via the pm system, it wasn't because of any pics posted!)
I feel quite sad the forums have changed to the extent they have, now there is a lot of back biting and sniping and the breeding forum in particular gets dominated by who shouts the loudest and longest.

I used to love seeing the one horse owner post updates on their foal etc, and now that is in the minority. The whole damn place is taken over with debating whether European horses should be the be and end all..

I think what I might do is make a website where my breeding stock can be seen and nothing else, that will free up the blog for more general pics of the horses, at least that way I can't be suspected of advertising!
Anyone suggest the best place to put it?

I think doziesmummy is right in both her posts, both on the breeding forum & here and right also when she says don't worry about it.

H&H have an anti-advertising policy (presumably free advertising loses them income?) and they aren't worrying about it- so why should you?

I think we all draw the line between the sort of advertising that is often unconscious or just good PR and the sort of blatant advertising that is intrusive & should be forbidden; I'm sure you can tell yourself when someone is pushing it a bit, & I don't think you would post what you might object to reading.

I don't dislike even more blatant advertising myself, though, because you can ask questions & heckle in a way that you couldn't otherwise do.

There wouldn't be much left of the breeding forum if all commercial considerations were stripped out of it for fear that they constituted advertising. There would be no stallion owners or promoters, or even mare owners who might sell the foal. There would be no breeding advice from AP- because he makes his living in this business. Futurities, etc. could not be mentioned- they charge an entrance fee. Studbook gradings- wrong to promote a particular studbook as there are financial implications. No mention of grading youngstock, as this makes them more marketable. Advice on which stallion to use, etc., would no longer be appropriate.

In the end there'd just be me... talking to myself...

You say often enough in passing that your stallion doesn't stand at public stud, and I, for one, thoroughly enjoy your blog, without getting the impression for one minute that you are touting for business. If someone should happen to like your horses and wonder privately if it/they may be for sale then that is a matter between you and them, and that applies to every horse shown on here.

Some people need to get a life if they have nothing better to do than nit pick.

Gah. In my signature there is a foal which could have been for sale, and a stallion that is licensed and if anyone asked could be available for stud. So, in effect, I too, am advertising by having pictures up here if that is the case.

WHO CARES! If H&H feel a post crosses the line they can remove it, why do other people feel the need to get all upset about it???

Perhaps I would say that though... the pictures in my signature mean that every post I make is effectively an advertisement IMO. Where do you draw the line?
