is round pen work as stressful

Depends on how much pressure you put on.

If you use a round pen properly there is no need to cause it to be stressful for the horse, but a lot of people constantly nag the horse like some do when lunging which is stressful.
 
What age is your horse? What are you trying to achieve? Are you training or exercising? Why use a round pen at all? How experienced are you in things like longreining and longeing?
 
She is 5. i have injured and subsequently had my hand operated on so cannot hold anything. i have some one to ride once or twice a week but my mare has a lot of energy as very fit. X
 
I think it can be as stressful on joints as lunging as clearly it is circle work and not good for the a horse in rehab, however you can make your horse more responsive just to voice to change direction etc in a roundpen as you have their attention captured, so it is more interesting and challenging I think.
 
Working on a circle, whether in a round pen or not, is not good for the joints of young animals. The horse should be allowed to work out on a large circle, as small circles put huge stresses on joints and limbs, and the durations of sessions kept to a few minutes on each rein.
