Is she the right weight yet ?

he seems fine, maybe a little underweight but its probably lack of muscle due to his age :) i am no expert though

he is a very lucky pony, to have such a nice retirement! and a massive bed!! :D

For a young sec D... no way. That is way off. More 480kg however, at 44 I think she sound great. We are just coming out of winter and spring will put some back on.

Anyway, I know you are probably using weightape on her as a personal measure which is great but it will probably be way off if you put her on scales.

It depends on the height... My section D mare is 14.1 hh, and weighs around 400 kgs on the weigh tape, and according to the vet she is the right size and shape. Last summer she weighed 440 kgs and got laminitis so we have had the opposite problem to OP in getting the weight off. Now I weigh tape weekly and ask the vet and farrier to look at her condition as I find it too hard to judge changes in a pony I see twice a day.
My poor vet would have a heart attack if my pony weighed in at 480 kgs!
My mare is 21 - I hope she lasts as long and as happily as yours has - you are obviously doing something right!

She's looking really good for her age, in fact I'd never have guessed she was that old! I did laugh at her bed at around 2.30 - not much chance of her getting cold!

Tallyho! I've got a 7yo welsh cob that's around 14.2, on my weightape he's about 465kg & I'm trying hard to get weight off him as he should be a lot lighter than he is.

She will thank you for keeping her lean, overweight on old ones is far worse than coming out of winter looking as good as she does.

I agree with the others if our welsh section d was was 480 she would be huge, she is 14.2 and at 440 looks like the side of a house, this time of year she needs to be sub 400 to ensure a healthy summer!

As everybody else has said she looks really good. Rather than using a weight tape try condition score but this could be a little hard as with every body everything has moved south so her try to feel for places where fat is diposited like the head of the tail and the shoulder. One thing that could help her is to put her hay on the floor, in a haynet her head is up and back more arched helping it dip even further if it was on the floor she would stretch down through her back and help to lift it a tad.

She looks fantastic! 44 wow. What a brilliant job you are doing. I also think that her hay should be on the ground, no haynet. Her teeth wont be in great shape to pull hay out of the net. Having said that, who am I to tell you. I have never had a horse of 44! Well done.

My mare is in her 20's and I would be so thrilled if she was still alive in 20 years time!

She is a lovely old lady, it makes you wonder what her life was like back in the 1960's and what she did and how many owners she has had.

As for the hay, my mare does that weeing on hay too (in the field). Have you thought of putting up a diy HayBar in the corner of the stable using a length of wood?

She looks great for 44! And I can see she is very well looked after, keep up the good work ;) I think her weight sounds good for her age, although I am no expert.

Ok well, if 480 sounds alot for your sec D then you've all got small section D's... mine is of the 15.2hh variety so I would be worried if he weighed less. Chill your boots people!!!

I was trying to illustrate a certain point, not state absolute facts. Get some context and reason, I wasn't suggesting OP's mare was thin. Infact, I was also trying to say that weightapes could be way out.

No need to have a go at me just because mine weighs in at 480.
