Hi everyone my mare was scanned 8 weeks ago as physio notices a slight very slight lameness. Scan showed some mild damage to front suspensory ligaments with some roughening on canon bone . 6 weeks box rest advised Initialy . Bet has been back today to re scan and has said he is happy with the healing so far ! He says all is looking as it should and healing as well as he would hope at this point . He has said I can even start to introduce short hacks.

But!!
He has suggested I maybe try shockwave treatment as well as he said it’s very good for suspensory damage near the bone . But I’ve heard so many mixed thought I would love to hear some opinions ! Is it worth it ? Is time just as good ? I just don’t know !
Would hate to think I had missed something that could help but equally it’s very expensive and I’m looking for thoughts
Thankyou in advance
Alex

My horse had a mild suspensory injury. He had PRP and also 3 X shockwave. He also had an Arc Equine and controlled exercise.

The suspensory healed up so any damage was no longer visible and he was sound. Sadly he then became a wobler so we never tested it under competition conditions.

I am not sure that it was not the rest and controlled exercise that did the trick, but that is what we did with good result.

My Connie had shockwave treatment last year for a near fore suspensory desmitis. At the same time he spent three weeks in rehab where he had cold water salt therapy treatment every day. Walking began in week 4 initially 10 minutes per day on the walker and then in hand. Once ridden it was lots of walking in straight lines and I gradually introduced slopes, off camber, hills and then we started to trot. He has been sound ever since but didn't go back into the school until December. Luckily he is insured and overall the cost for rehab and 5 shockwave sessions was around £2000.

I’ve had success with using shockwave in conjunction with the Equinetendon.com Rehabilitation device.

I found the horses were almost desensitized after the shockwave - then got a bit tender- but then saw a radical improvement. At the end of the day shockwave does really well to “activate” the fibers and reduce the build up of scar tissue (which can undermine the tendon and lead to further / reinjury).

Personally worth the money

Did nothing at all for a fellow liveries suspensory branch injury, he had a few sessions - what swung it in the end was PRP.

I think it depends where in the suspensory the injury is and how severe it is. B's was just a tweak so no hole or tear and shockwave worked really well as it was just a case of improving the blood flow so the body repaired itself. PRP wasnt a first resort as the injury didn't warrant it at that time but for difficult and badly damaged to treat injuries it is supposed to be very successful.
