Anyone else notice spring is starting to arrive ?

Our grass must be coming through, as the broodmares who usually enjoy their home comforts have decided they would rather stay out. Finn who usually sings at me to be brought in just gave me the side eye and walked off . Fields are soggy in places, but something must be coming through .. Anyone else ?

Im not complaining mind..

I'm not sure the grass has actually stopped growing! my field has remained green all winter! I have a section fenced off and there is defo some growth in there, not tonnes but more than what they've been grazing all winter.

they've also need eating hay for half an hour then going off grazing again, so its making me think they're still grass coming through.

I'm praying that spring in on her way!

I don't think it's coming early, I think it's just been such a dire winter we are shocked to see any signs of life beyond relentless rain and sub-zero temperatures 😅

It popped up on my FB memories that this time last year we had some lovely bright, sunny days hacking out and the daffodils were out. It's also the usual time of year for 'false spring' where we get a few nice days and then the weather turns again until mid-March.

The grass is definitely growing though and the birds are very noisy/busy which always gives me a glimmer of hope that we are on the right side of winter finally!

actually thats true! my FB memories from 3 years ago today, I had driven my car into the field to flatten down the mud in the gate way! theres no chance I'll be doing that any time soon this year.

Yes, my grass has started putting a decent growth in. Our two natives have given up eating much hay overnight in their stables and even the sporty mare who a couple of weeks ago was eating hay like it is going out of fashion, has stopped finishing her net.

All the birds around here suddenly seem very merry too - both starlings and redwings are making an absolute din around ours at the moment.

I agree with @Fransurrey and @KikiDee , it seems about average to me. Just, with more rain and less sun. I'm not exaggerating to say that in our part of N Yorks I think we've had one day of sun in the past three to four weeks. And it's rained almost every day. Our snowdrops are coming out on time but they're not very impressive this year, probably because they're being battered by rain every day.

I also don't think the grass stopped growing for very long, and we're very lucky in that our field is large, sloping and therefore not muddy, but there can't be much goodness in the grass because both my horses - age 17 and 2 - are losing weight unless I shovel hay and feed into them. But again, I think the relentless rain doesn't help there.

The grass does seem to be growing and this is now our second consecutive day with no rain (I am ignoring the forecast that is calling for heavy rain later today). Looks like the temperatures are starting to plummet though.

Ours are definitely grazing more busily in the last couple of days, and I agree that the grass hardly stopped growing. We have a lot of mud but the green bits are doing their best. I’m still expecting another month before things really turn around but there is a glimmer of hope at last.

I mean my fields look like there is nothing edible there, but the horses aren’t eating quite as much hay and they have their heads down so there must be something coming through 🤞

My guys aren't hanging around the gate to come in as early as they were and they're not always clearing their nets each night, so I think we are starting to get through to Spring, but I do think it will be another month or so before we see any obvious improvement as we've all had such wet weather x

My yard owner said we're getting the grass we should have got last summer, and that the earth naturally resets it self. I liked this thought and pray hes right! Hope we dont end up out 24/7 late cos of wet fields like 2024...

i reckon shes spot on. I noticed the local farmers silage field is positively blooming this year, versus last year which i remember had very little on it. Its now well above ankle height 🤞🏻🤞🏻

We beginning to see lots of snowdrops pop up, and even some daffs are beginning to stand up ready to bloom!

It's pretty warm here - 9-11degC, but still very very wet so unsure on grass growth as fields are pretty much mud and/or water.

Keeping fingeres crossed for some dry, windy days to dry up the fields! I think thy'll come back really quickly this year :D

Grass grows when its 10 degrees and up, and it just hasnt been that cold this winter, so I'm not sure it ever really stopped for a long period. Weve got snow predicted at the weekend though!

Me too! Mine are leaving their hay to go and graze and not always waiting for their feeds in the morning so it must be coming through. If we get a few days of dry at the moment it *just* starts to dry up and become tolerable and then we get another massive downpour and puts us back. But we are almost mid Feb so it’s downhill from now!
