Is that a crown that you wear? (actually just a riding hat question!)

Yo yo yo horsie homies. Anyone got any recommendations for riding hats/helmets for everyday use under £150? Must have ventilation.

Also, I've always wanted to know the difference between riding hats and cycle helmets in terms of safety standards/protection. Seeing as cyclists can hurtle along at 40+ mph. Do they offer more or less protection.

Thanks!

I think cycle helmets and riding hats have completely different designs. Basically, a bike helmet will never be as safe for horse riding as a proper riding helmet. They don't cover the back of your head, for one thing; are not designed to protect you against falls from a greater height,;and are also not designed to protect against a secondary blow from a horse's hoof or body hitting you.

We can recommend Uvex helmets. My wife has one with MIPS (the technology is still open to debate), I have one without. Comfortable, well ventilated. Built using the same structure as cycling helmets but with better head coverage.

There are essentially two main different designs. Hard outer shell helmets with a thinnish foam lining, such as a jockey skull cap. They have good protection against penetration and crush injuries, such as the horse stepping on your head, but less shock absorbency. They tend to be heavier. Then there are the thin shells covering a relatively thick core of expanded foam. Less penetration protection but greater shock absorbency, lighter, better ventilated. These are the styles similar to climbing and cycling helmets. The technology is well proven, I've been wearing this style for climbing and cycling for years, and most reputable brands meet the relevant safety standards.

Which ever fits you as fitted by a competent person.
No point in asking for recommendations really as those might not fit you.

Cycle helmets are just a bit of Styrofoam essentially. Horse riding helmets go through rigorous testing to withstand a certain level of force and impact. I wouldn't even think of getting on a horse in a cycle helmet- you might as well not wear one.

Thanks! I tried one today. It fitted well and was very comfy. I'll probably go back and buy it tomorrow. Hoorah!
