Is the buster trio with the 3 liners worth it? Or alternatives?

Hi,

My mare has ripped her outdoor rug so it needs to be replaced. I haven't had any premier equine rugs before but have searched the reviews on here and they seem pretty good, plus I have quite a lot of other premier equine things and I like them.

Just wondering if I should get the buster trio complete, with the 100g outer, 100g, 200g and 350g liners and the 2 hoods. Not sure I would use them all though? My mare is fully clipped out but she also wears a back on track rug as a base layer.

If you have this one do you find you use all the different liners? Is the 350g liner with the rug warm enough in the winter? Or do you put other rugs on under? Or would I be better to just get a LW rug and maybe 1 liner?

Or is there a better rug in general? I like the Rambo duo but its the same money and you only get one liner.

Any info would be great, thanks :)

I think they are worth it, the liners can be used under any rug so they are very versatile. I do find that I still need a heavy weight outer rug though so I both of mine have the trio system as well as a 450g PE HW that works with the liners, this allows me to keep them warm enough even in the coldest weather.

What build is your horse? PE are cut far too big around the shoulders for my horses, but they all fit Horseware rugs really well (except the XL ones :p).

Ooooo, so maybe she should have one of the HW ones from the sale too, this is getting pretty pricey!!

I have the complete trio set. So far this winter he's mainly been out in the rug only, or with the 100g liner. I used the 200g liner when there was that cold snap the other month and he'd just been given a trace clip, but found he was almost too warm in it. He is a WBxTB so not an especially hardy type but I think the high denier of the outer rug makes them very warm and the liner system (air trapped between layers) adds to that. The only complaint I have is that they are rather heavy rugs - but then I have a 7 foot rug that I am trying to hoy it over the back of a 17 hand horse! Find they sit very nicely and don't move about or pull on their shoulders.

ETA - the liners don't have straps

Don't buy the PE.

They are heavy and they leak. Mine went back and I got a duo.

Buy the PE liners as they fit the duo perfectly.

My duo is now 3 yrs old and not leaked once

i agree that they are particularly warm rugs, especially as the neck is nice and long and snug to stop drafts. i would personally want a no fill or 100g fill rug and then add liners, as then you can use the rug more of the year- i got a no fill this spring and love it :) need to get some liners and plan on replacing old grotty rugs with PE.

personally i was impressed with mine- as have found so many no fill turn outs have let some water through especially if heavy rain, where as my PE has kept them dry in torrential rain

I've not had the liners, but my boy has a heavyweight buster and I really like their rugs. He's a IDxTB and it fits really well, but we've also got connies on the yard and PE's fit them too.

We've never had an issue with leaking.

It may depend on how big your horse is around his neck and shoulders! The PE trio is too tight on mine. He is a 15.3 hh Section D with huge shoulders and big neck but only takes a 6'6" rug. The trio was so tight over his withers you could see it trying to stretch. The neck is a little higher and was very tight.

I have a duo which is brilliant - 6 yrs old and never leaked.

However, the PE was a lovely rug.

i wouldn't have another rambo rug if it was given to me , my £250 duo rug leaked after one winter , it also simply fell apart , straps dropped off and the liners rip really easily , utter rubbish

i bought a PE one to replace it about a month ago and its fab , mine is fully clipped (including legs) and he is more than warm enough with the heavy liner , i don't think i'd ever need to add another rug with that as he's even been a little too warm in it
the liners even fit in my washing machine so he always has a clean rug on :)

there nice deep tough rugs
my only grumble is it is heavy to lift onto the horse

Had mine 4 years and it's never leaked and my mare lives in it 24/7.

I've also never had to use another rug on top of the liners, my mare is a TB x Han and she is always toastie.

Also have one for my gelding, this is its 2nd year and again it's never leaked and he doesn't even use the thickest liner as he gets too warm. He is a warmblood.

I like them coz they are deep too. Well worth the money IMO.

Sounds like a winner then. Is it possible to wear more than 1 liner at a time? I know that you can only attach 1 liner to the rug but are the liners secure enough to put on under without being attached?

As a groom I will say I hate PE rugs! They are so heavy to put on and off and even worse when wet. They take ages to dry out although we have only had one leak and PE replaced it.

Personally I wouldny have one for my horse because of the weight on her back, especially if she lived out.I have a Rambo duo and its much lighter.

I'd dispute this totally!

I have 5 different outdoor PE rugs, not 1 of them has leaked, they all fit well.
The only 1 that has ever got 'heavy' at all, was ONCE - a trio outer when completely sodden - and had not been properly re-proofed last winter - and it was an original one from 2009. Still in use, currently on clipped Fuzzy, with occasional 100g liner overnight if v cold forecast.

To be honest, I prefer to have them in just 1 rug usually - anything from the 40g up to the 450 storm buster with full neck (brilliant and NOT heavy when wet)

I have the Rambo Duo and am very happy with it. I also find the PE very heavy when wet and a few other people on my yard have said the same thing.

You can attach more than one with the clips at the back, just not at the front. Ours was turned out with 2 liners was fine.

This :)

I love my trio, although I have a 450gm PE too as my mare gets very cold in winter and wears this with liners under.

I have however had 2 liners on fine, just doing the back clips up. I never do the front up anyway as I am forever changing the liners! I wouldn't put a liner on without the back clips done up though, they slip :)

I would never buy another PE. It is so heavy it is such hard work to put on and when it is wet it is a nightmare. Plus it leaks. The worst rug I have ever ever bought. I have recently bought a medium weight rambo amigo. Beautiful rug, water proof, lightweight and the horse loves it.

Not suprised at the number of people who find the PE heavy and leaky.

You can dispute it if you so wish.

Premier Equine however did not!

They not only refunded the cost of the rug but also the cost of me returning it to them.

They tested it and agreed it leaked like a sieve

It was a trio and leaked from the very first time it was used

I was going to get a trio but friend has one & I've found it very heavy to deal with. Instead I've got a heavyweight PE for when it's really nasty weather,I love it & it's never leaked. I bought a amigo bravo 100g with neck cover & 2 liners. The amigos great,it's very light even with liners in & much more manageable than a trio. I've a 100g & 200g liner & it's given me loads of flexibility with rugging. As it's been so mild I've mostly used the amigo so far this winter & I've used the liner as under rugs in stable as well. Also the liners fit my PE so if I need another layer, if it's really cold I can use one under that.

I have a trio bought in the sale about 3 years ago, I wouldn't pay today's prices for one. It's a versatile rug and I haven't had a problem with leakage, but I don't get on with the liner system; as others have said, it makes them heavy and awkward to put on. I only really use it without the liners in spring and autumn as a lightweight, which it is great for, but that makes the liners a bit of a waste.

My everyday winter rugs are Rambo Supremes bought secondhand, which I wouldn't swap for anything.

I have the full system for my clydesdale. They are very generous at the neck, and in depth. I've never.had to use the heavy weight liner, she's always warm in the med. Never had a.leak, even in torrential wind and rain. I'll be buying another when she needs.new.
