Is the greenguard muzzle actually worth the money?

My horse took really well to the bucket style muzzle, until one day he decided he hated it and started getting it off in about 10 minutes and refusing to have it put on.

I am already trying to decide the best option for when the spring grass comes, and wondered if I should try him in a green guard instead?

Is it actually worth the money? Has anyone found their horse to get along with this muzzle when all others have failed? I don't want to fork out if he is going to break it within a few minutes as he does with all the others!
 
Deffinately Yes!! I have had the Greenguard Grazing Muzzle with the halter for 3 years now and it is still going strong. My mare wears its every day when turned out summer & winter, so I'd say its well worth it. If you're going for the greenguard, make sure you buy the 2nd edition as the 1st one the plastic was very low at the sides that the horse could just eat over it.
 
My mare wears a green guard in the summer now as she started trashing the bucket ones.....she has never got it off, or even tried, which does suggest to me that she can eat more through it than the other ones. Doesn't matter too much to me as she wears it cause she is a fatty, not cause she gets lami, but might be worth considering if you have one that 'must' not eat too much
 
I have one and the halter, never used that I would sell. I thought that my mare wouldn't keep the bucket one on so I bought it as a back up but she is very happy in the shires so it is just sitting there. It is the second edition with the higher sides...... Full size, let me know :)
 
My pony didn't get on with the greenguard.
I didn't actually like the headcollar that Greenguard sell as it has a fastening around the throat, which didn't look like it would release if it got caught in the field. I'll only turn him out in fieldsafe headcollar.

So I made my own version with another headcollar. I found the grate they graze through really irritated his skin as it was really tricky to get it sitting correctly. If I sat it in the correct place, his chin got sore and dry. If put it down a little to give his chin more room, he can get his nose through the straps at the side!

So I settled for a slightly baggy bucket muzzle with a larger hole cut out. He is fab in this and can get enough grass through without it really stressing him out, but not too much he puts on weight. I prefer it as well as he acts normally in it, whereas the greenguard and a smaller bucket muzzle made him much more stressed and unhappy. So for me it was an expensive waste of time.
 
Mine is onto his second one in 3 years, definitely worth the cost. He had worked out how to loosen then move his old-style one to one side, so I replaced it with the current one and he hasn't managed to remove it, despite his best efforts at first. I think they accept them after a couple of months anyway.
I took the throat-strap off as I was worried about safety and he still hasn't got it off so no worries there. It did rub him a bit round the noseband so I wrapped it in gaffer tape which solved that problem. It's a life-saver for my horse and I will replace this one when it wears out. The Shires bucket one rubbed his face too much - having read lots of posts about muzzles I think it's a lot dependent on your horse's face shape, not so much a 'one size fits all'.
 
Hmm it's so difficult to know whether it'll work or not without trying it! Lots of mixed reviews!

How can you easily tell if it's 1st or 2nd edition?

The updated version of this is so much better designed than the original one so best to get one of them if you can. They do only come in small and large as far as I can remember Toffee_Monster.
 
I use the greengaurd with both my horses, 1 from a health perspective - too much lush grass brings on colic :( and 1 from a weight perspective (puts weight on at the mention of spring grass :)

i really do rate them and wouldnt hesitate to reccomend them

with the bucket ones, 1 horse used to remove it as soon as i let go of him in the field and the other horse used to wait to come in after only an hour of being turned out
