I have posted about this little dog before but things have got worse.

We look after a few dogs in the village when their owners are away and this particular dog is kept in pitiful conditions. The owners other dogs are allowed the run of the house and garden but because this little girl is rather aggressive with the other dogs she is kept in a small cage in an unused room in the house. She is let out to have a wee etc twice a day so is kept in this cage for 23 hours 45 minutes in a 24 hour period.

She is very aggressive if you go near her cage, but a sweetie out of it. OH has to use a broom handle to undo the cage as if you are within striking distance when you open it she will have you.

This time we have brought her up to our house and put her in one of our empty kennels. She was a bit stressed at first having all that room and being near to our dogs but has really settled well, although is still very aggressive if you open the kennel to go in to fill her food up etc.

Now the owner has rung rescue centres to see if they will take this little dog, but obviously they won't touch her with a barge pole. We have suggested to owner that perhaps the best thing to do would be to have the dog PTS but she won't. She has asked if we will have her. OH is now suggesting we tell owner we will take her and then have her PTS ourselves. However, I know OH, he is a complete soft touch and really likes this little dog.

If you were us would you return her to her owner when she comes back off holiday, keep her here and have her PTS or keep her permanently?

As far as I can see these are her only options. I couldn't take the dog and rehome her to someone else myself as I couldn't live with myself if she bit someone or attacked another dog.

What would you do?

Contrary to my normal answers, I'd keep her and give her a chance. She's had the most miserable life, poor soul, I think she deserves a break so why not set a deadline of something like 2 months for her to turn around and if she is still as bad or worse, then I'd PTS because as you say, she's not something you could pass on with a clear conscience.

What a sad story - poor little soul. My heart says she deserves a chance at a more normal life - however short that is, so if you are able to take her and keep her for a while to see if she calms down, then do. If you give her a chance and she is just too badly 'damaged' then I think that in all good conscience you can have her pts. Sometimes this really is the only option but I don't think you are ready for that yet so if you can bear to do it, give her a go. I'd love to see you post later in the Spring that she's settled and is a joy, but failing that I'd like to think that she had someone good give her a go, and then do what is right by her if necessary. Good luck with it.

I agree - the fact that you have achieved quite a lot with this little dog hints that you might be able to turn her round.. and give her a chance. I think the idea of a couple of months to see if she improves is an excellent one - and maybe a good rescue might be able to recommend additionial help? Your OH sounds like a sweetie ... and not the only softie in the house either!

I would take her on, without a doubt. No wonder she's behaving the way she is, being kept in a crate 23/7. She may suit being an only dog, some dogs just don't like sharing their home with other dogs. As long as you take her on with your eyes wide open and give her the attention (emotionally and physically) she needs then given time she may become the dog she was meant to be.

Good for you and I wish you every success with her if you decide to give her the chance.

As I said in the other thread, if you do take her on I would get a trainer or an experienced person to help with properly socialising her, if not send her to them, it may be a hard job, or she may surprise you.

Please be careful with your own dogs, also.

My dog took a year to turn around from dog aggression under the guidance of three trainers, two months would be no time at all (different breed, I know).

As I also mentioned, if I were you, I wouldn't be going near these people or taking their money ever again if it has been going on this long, what a miserable life that poor dog has been leading.

If at all possible I would give her a chance, I too am a soft touch, but poor wee soul, she has had a tough time. Not easy but with some TLC she may come good. Good luck.

If Ive read your post correctly shes good out of the crate but not in it? not surprising being in there 23 hours a day really. Echo everyone else

We have a lovely little terrier, we got him from a house where he wasnt house trained, he was never walked, kept in a shed or kitchen.

When we got him he was distressed and agressive, took a ayear for him to settle, but he did, good little dog now

Echoing the others about giving her a chance. Ive taken on a couple of bad cases before and been able to turn them around...twice not, but at least giving them a chance at a normal life before taking the final step.

Wishing you all the very best of luck and if you do decide to have a go with this poor little love please keep us posted x

Our male Weimaraner was kept locked in a shed before we got him and he was initially horrendous. OH got bitten on a regular basis for no reason other than he moved his foot or coughed or something daft like that. The vet recommended we have him put down but a year later he was a different dog. Daft as a brush and much much better, although he does occasionally still have his moments! Hopefully we can turn little Millie round too.

It seems we have talked each other into keeping her and we will keep you updated. We will take pics this weekend too, she is a cutie, mainly English Bull Terrier judging by the shape of her head and nose!

She can't come into the house until next weekend when our friends dog goes back. We have had her since her owners house caught fire and were made homeless but they are moving into rental accommodation soon.
