Is the owner messing me about?

Given the age and condition of the particular horse and the fact that you can't look after her, she sounds unlikely to find another loan home and the owner sounds unkeen to have her back (we all have no idea about the owners personal circumstances which may be no better than your own)
It might be time to have a very open and honest conversation with the owner (not by text) to see whether PTS is the best thing in this circumstance. Yes there is a cost to PTS but only about a months grass livery so not huge compared to perhaps another 5/10 years she could live.

Sorry I;m sure this will sound very harsh but many many of us are living in very tough economic times and tough decisions have to be made.

Polos Mum - Harsh comment but have to agree. In the end of the day the only one that is really going to suffer is the horse.

I also think that the owner isn't messing you around or taking the piss, a contract is a contract. Imagine if she wasn't even in the country and didn't have anywhere to live for another 2 months (hence the 3month period) ? I think it's wrong to go slating her on a public forum. Ok, so it's not your fault and you couldn't have helped your situation, but it's not the owners fault. You have a contract and in this case you may not be able to respect it but this is something you should have thought about before agreeing. She might not be able to afford the horse herself (hence loaning her out !). Totally wrong to slate her like this...

Hi Jaycee - what part of back of beyond do you live in? If the owner did decide to pts, do you think this wld be the worst outcome for mare, although dreadfully sad for you, losing yet another part of what you thought was safe? If you are within UK, I'll have a go at helping you as much as I can.

For all those who showed concern over my predicament:

Horse concerned has gone home
House move is going ahead
OH situation has been resolved

Thank you again for the support and to those who said the owner wasn't messing me about??? I reserve judgement on that one due to recent communications between us.

Yes I took mine back within couple of days when my lovely loaner was having cancer treatment. I know as an owner the buck stops with me & believe a little humanity is called for when someone is going through a life crisis..not being pedantic about every term of a loan agreement.

I agree with this! I have been in a similar situation and as has been said, the owner is ultimately responsible......s...t happens to everyone and we all need a little compassion rather than thinking about legalities and contracts....

I've been following this story very quietly but just wanted to say how pleased I am that you have managed to sort everything out :)
Onwards and upwards now and I wish you all the very best x
