is the saying true never buy a Chesnut mares do you own one or have

This was discussed a couple of weeks ago, and the general concensus was, the old 'chestnut mare' thing is a load of rubbish, they're great.

I had a chesnut arab mare for twenty odd years , i got her as a three year old after her short racing career and i was a young child. I would not have swapped that mare for the world,she was the kindest,most genuine,loyal,and safe horse i have ever come across.She was my once in a life time horse and i dont think i would find another like her.
I work with racehorses we have many chestnut mares and there is not one that has got a nice attitude. They kick,bite,stroppy as hell when in season,and not the nicest of mares to foal, i dont know in all honesty i think mayb i just got lucky with mine and yes i would probably have another tomorrow if it was anything like mine!
 
umm.. I have a chestnut mare.. 90% of the time she is generally nice however there is that 10% of her that can be a total moo! I do love her though and her naughtyness makes her very special to me.. When I first got her it kinda scared me abit.. Now I just laugh at her and tell to stop trying to kill me cos if she did no one would feed her anymore!

I have a chestnut mare with 4 white socks...... most obliging and amenable girl I have ever met
She is such a nice person that everyone who meets her falls in love.

And this is from someone who really only does bay geldings.....

Sometimes I wish my bay gelding was as good.
 
My friend used to have a chestnut arabxwelsh and she was absolutely lovely, we had many great times together!

i have a bright orange chestnut mare! and she is the most talented of my 4 horses. shes only a 14.2 pony and has jumped dble clears and been placed regularily BE Nvice. shes got a bit of temprement but then so do all top athletes! id always buy a chestnut mare... if you get good one they are unbeatable as they are very loyal and will do anything for you.
 
QR - think its a load of rubbish, for every stereotypical 'chestnut mare' out there, there is probably another 10 that are perfect. Look at how many other 'myths' are out there, for e.g....

TB's are unridable & crazy, WB's are stubborn, Duns can't jump, Mares won't make top grades due to their attitudes, black horses are evil etc etc. (am sure there are loads more!)

All piffle if you ask me!!

I have two chesnut mares and both have a wonderful tempremant.

would hardly even know they are in season, I have ridden many mares that are nasty moo bags but have yet to meet a horrid orange one
 
I used to have a chestnut mare and she was one of the most genuine horses I've come across. She had a lovely temperament and would go out and be happy to work no matter what the weather was like. She was a good all rounder and would do everything form hack out to jump. Sadly she she had to be put to sleep when she was hit by a car out hacking in 2001 or I'd still own her now. She was a proper sweetheart.
 
As others have said, a load of rubbish! My YO has a bright chestnut tb mare who is lovely to handle. Though she did come back off loan due to biting the loaner's face!!! As YO said, what was the girl doing for her to be bitten in the face?

I used to ride a bright chestnut arab mare and she was absolutely lovely, and a good jumper with it.

I had a chestnut arab mare with white socks and she was the sweetest mare ever. Children could handle her. She was a pain in the @ss to ride though, soooo difficult. We just didn't click at all. I sadly lost her in Feb as she had a cyst up her nasal passage but she was 20 and still looked like this

My TB ex-racer mare is chestnut too. She's "The Precious One", my horse of a life time. She has her, ahem, quirks but I think the world revolves around her. We've had a hellish 18mths with her being lame for nearly all of it and then being operated on this year. Don't think I've ever been so scared, but she got through it and is sound so onwards and upwards

I have a chestnut QH mare and she is lovely. She is classed as sorrel over here, so perhaps that's all you have to do to get over that myth.

I was looking for a chestnut mare arab or TB a few years ago, but then I saw Jake and it was love at first sight.

He is a 16.3 grey Clydesdale x Highland not at all what I was looking for, but I like the way he looked at me and his attitude.

I like horses with attitude and think for themselves which is probably why I was drawn to a chestnut mare.
