We seem to be overwhelmed with rugs (who isn't this time of year) but have little space to store neatly or to dry wet muddy rugs, is there such a thing as free standing rug racks, as the way these stables were built I wouldn't want to start drilling holes in the wall or add the weight of rugs to the wall either so I am looking at ways of storing rugs in other ways... any suggestions...

We have washing lines hung the length of thre barn to hang wet rugs on too dry - it is open fronted so pretty effective as well ventilated.

For clean rugs I bought a large plastic storage unit from B and Q years ago - think it was designed for storing garden cushions, and can get 8 rugs in that easily (measures about 4ft long and 2ft deep)

Don't know if that helps?!

I strung up a set of draw reins and use them for drying my rugs, i also have clothes rails for if theyre just a bit damp that i sit them over to dry in the heated tackroom

I have two 5ft long rug rails that I plan to screw to the beams in my hay store or tack room so instead of screwing them in to a vertical wall I will turn them 90 degrees and screw upwards in to the beam with the rugs hanging down.

I also have a batten of wood about 7ft long that is attached to a beam with rope that hangs down against the wall in the stable that I hang rugs over

If you thread a piece of rope/washing line through a length of drain pipe you will find it is much easier to take the rug off as the pipe rolls. Also the line will not go saggy in the middle so the rug dries better.

For storing/ airing more rugs you could screw headcollar hooks into the beams (instead of walls) if they're strong enough, and hang rugs up by the chest straps/ clips (hanging vertically). They possibly won't dry wet ones quite as well as the drainpipe idea above, although they may do if you leave enough space between hooks, but you can store more rugs that way so you could always have a few hooks and a horizontal hanging drier :).

You can get big chunky shelf units from B&Q and Homebase I think, they've got big gaps between shelves and the shelves themselves are slatted, you can fit quite a few folded up rugs on them. Otherwise, we tend to store our dry rugs in big plastic boxes / chests. To dry, Ive just strung up 2 drain pipes which hang on strong rope from the rafters - drain pipes are the length of the rugs so I just chuck the rugs over, they're up against the wall so kept out of the way nicely unlike my purpose built metal rug rack at my mums which sticks out from the wall and takes up so much space.
