Has anyone found a surefire way to stop the mane rubbing away by the neck piece on a turnout rug?.

I have already tried sewing in a piece of silk, but that didn't help. I thought of trying a strech kneck "thingy" that fastens over ears and under chest. (Haven't yet though).

I use a three pronged attack;

1) Supreme Showing Products moisture and condition spray - this helps strengthen the mane
2) Any brand of coat/mane gloss - helps to ensure the fabric glides over the mane rather than catches and rubs it out
3) A Thermatex lycra turnout hood

I find combining all three works a treat. The hood alone does work, but there are still broken hairs etc. The Moisture and Condition is super for strengthening fine hairs.

I was thinking about this when I turned my horse out this morning. This year is the first time I've had no rubbing at all, and my mare has worn a full neck rug all winter.

I think the difference this year is the rug fits her brilliantly (rambo supreme - with detatchable neck) and I have just left her to it. I haven't pulled her mane at all this winter so she looks like a feral pony, but I wonder whether that has helped!

Also, I have 2 necks for my rug so I can scrub the grease off the inside of one and replace it with a clean one while it dries. I think having clean fabric next to the hair helps a lot.

The foolproof way is to stop using high neck rugs. They don't need them. They never even existed until a few years ago. I don't believe manyhorses really want to be wrapped up to the eyeballs, we just want them clean and do it for our own convenience.

What about when their kneck is clipped out and they live out most of the time?

I've changed all my rugs for neckless this winter and so far so good, touch wood!
