Is there a market for second hand horsey stuff?

I think a lot of people have no idea what good quality looks or smells like, so a cheap bridle made in India out of inferior leather looks a bargain. Same with rugs, good quality rugs look Ok when they are five or more years old if you do not wash all the proofing out of them, in the effort to get a clean rug that will be covered in mud the next day, but not as shiny new as one you can buy for half the price so its in this seasons colours.
Most of all my rugs and all my saddles are second hand, some bought in person and one online, never had any problems with them and the few that I have sold on I have recouped my money. You just need the right buyer, things that fit the average animal and known brands.
 
I love a bargain (don't we all?) but find that all the shops selling 2nd stuff seem to close not long after I've found them. :(

I used to sell stuff on ebay but now given up as refuse to pay their fees. I advertise on our local website and had some success.

I decided a few weeks ago that I would hold a tack sale as there hasn't been one my way for years. If anyone in the New Forest/Salisbury area wants a rummage on Saturday and the opportunity to have a munch on homemade cakes please PM me!

My house isn't huge and neither my garage so I couldn't keep it all any longer. I find now the only way to shift it is to sell at a huge loss or bin it which is a bit sad really :(

It would be worth paying to advertise it on BD website. I did a mass clear out of high quality branded stuff recently and it all sold off BD

Preloved however was a waste of time ...
 
If your doing photos make sure the tack is clean and well presented. I hate the ads that say needs a clean. Why if you can't be bothered to clean it I can't be bothered to buy it. Also bits must be in perfect condition. Check for cracks etc and don't leave the remains of grass on there. Wash it!
 
I think much second hand stuff is sold on Facebook, preloved and eBay - those would be your competition. You would need to offer something that those sites don't, like no quibble returns, try before you buy etc.

^^ This. I buy & sell A LOT on Ebay.
However, as pp have said, the fees are extortionate. I would love a HH selling page. I have lots & lots to sell.

This. one of the tricks is to buy something that looks shabby or badly presented cheaply, clean it up, present it better and sell for more

The one thing I don't do though is oil or condition leather as people can have strong preferences on what they use
 
I regularly have tack room clear outs and sell it all on ebay! Horsey stuff sells really well on there! And i tend to buy only second hand unless i cant find what im after, only then will buy new. It always amazes me what people at my yard throw away! My horse is currently wearing brushing boots that someone threw on the skip thst had a velcro strap missing (i sewed on a new bit of velcro and shes been wearing them 2 years now!) As well as an almost brand new headcollar that got thrown away with a broken throat lash trigger clip, i just attached a new clip and hey presto, brand new headcollar for free! (God i sound like a right Steptoe!)
