The hay ball post got me thinking...

We throw share horsey's hayledge on the floor and that works fine :-)

I know some people use nets to slow down scoffers but for those with fancy expensive hay-distribution devices (bags, bars, balls, whatever) is there a reason why you wouldn't just chuck it in a bucket, you know, a big flexible one like this kind of thing http://www.insideurbangreen.org/2009/03/flexible-bucket-planters-.html?

I'm guessing because they can pick it up with teeth/kick it over but placed in a corner that wd probs only happen when almost empty anyway, no?

I tried putting hay into a big TubTrug but the horse just pulled it all out and spread it all over the stable, wasting most of it in the process. In the field I've got a huge wooden crate/feeder thing and they still manage to drag a fair bit of hay out that too . . . .

I use something pretty much like that (Tubtrug) for feed and hay. I soak the hay in the bucket, turn it upside down to drain it, then carry it into her stable. No mess, easier for me, and reduces the amount she kicks into her bed (she does manage some, but less than if it was loose).

She does move it around a bit, and tips it over, but she won't hurt herself on it and she can always move it again if it's in her way

I suppose ideally, I'd use a haynet to stop her kicking it into her bed (she doesn't scoff it anyway), but I hate the bloody things (seen too many accidents), so I won't use them. I find a bucket a reasonable compromise

I use 2 tubtrugs - 1 packed full of haylage and the other full of soaked hay. Works fine, pone eats from floor and doesnt it get in her bed plus no nasty haynets!

You know what - thats a damn good idea...

I was going to wait until we move into the new stable block to invest in a haybar but I think I will give this a whirl first- can always wedge it into a corner of the stable....

Hmmm.....thats my mission for the weekend

i use the biggest trug too, have looped on old leapdrope round the handle and clipped it to some very worn twine on a ring in the corner, so its relatively fixed and cant be tipped but will break away if it he sits in/walks in etc.

been in there 6 months now and no probs and barely any hay in his bed, hurrah!
