May be a bit of a numpty but............
Our box is 3.5t, lovely little 'P' reg DAF with an Ifor Williams 'trailer style' box. It's fantastic to drive and compact enough to park in a supermarket car park should the need arise (hasn't so far, lol). Trouble is, it gets lonely going places solo and there's really only enough weight allowance for a small pony once a horse is onboard.
So, is there such a thing as a 'short' wheel base capable of around a 2.5t payload? And, if such an item exists, would it exist in the secondhand market for around 3k?
My licence is old enough to allow me to drive up to 7.5t but I really don't need the size. Living on a small island, we never travel more than 35 miles, that's there and back, have no need for living space, so, just would like to carry 2 horses!

In a word. = No.
Sorry.

Its just not possible to have such a large payload on a small box - I wish horseytrek (you know) - and others - would wake up and smell the humus - people just think oh its fine - shove 2 horses in - and dont realise they are breaking the law.

A lovely 1000 pound fine might make people aware! :(

Edited to say - these things are all the rage at the moment - and prices are sky high!

As you have a full licence, look at 5-6t lorries, they are not much bigger than a 3.5t but have the dort of payload you are looking for. You are more likely to find something of that weight on your budget as they are less popular due to the licence restrictions.

We have a ford small lorry with the ifor williams back on.
It is one of the newer type ones which seem to be a lot lighter than the last one we had as they use some aluminium in them.
With a 16'2 and a 15'2 we had nearly 200kg spare when we got checked by the police last year. The seller of the box had told us we would be able to carry about 1 tons so hubby was quite relieved when we got told we were ok!
I have seen ones advertised to carry more than hours but they are very thin built and my horse has been known to mess about a bit :) so we wanted something stronger. When we were looking the best we could find was 1400kg for a 3.5t lorry though and that was very lightweight and very expensive
