Is there always this 'type' of woman on every yard??

We don't have one on my yard. Never have done. Nor on any of the yards where I was a livery. I hope that doesn't mean it was me!

I have one. I found it was best to completely ignore her very existence and after being the subject of snide remarks that were water off a duck's back now she ignores me too. It works very well, I'm not interested in having disagreements with someone who I've been thrown together with just because my horse lives at the same yard as hers.

It's different here, as not many livery yards, but you do have "parents" that you wish would just disappear, there is always one. so frustrating to pretend you care..... I do get asked alot for my opinion on peoples horses/ponies... things that they do etc... and i'm normally able to answer, but please dont ask if you are not willing to take on board the answer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oddly, we don't really seem to have such a woman! Everyone at our yard is really friendly and will give advice if asked, but not really offer it if not wanted. I wonder if it is because we are a slightly more 'mature' group?! There are youngsters, of course - but they all seem to be there to learn and have a really nice, friendly attitude too. I can't say that no one ever falls out, but all seems to blow over pretty quickly! Considering there are over 50 liveries, I think that's pretty good going!

The YO told me that her idea was to offer a yard which had a place for first time owners who want to learn (me!) and so our attitude is 'all advice gratefully received!' I think!

I think we are very lucky :D

Yep, but ours is a bloke! He still believes that dark hooves are stronger than white and doesn't understand that painting M's pale hooves with dark polish won't alter their structure or strength

Oh yes definitely! Some people in the horse world are very strange. I have recently moved yards and had thought everyone was lovely but slowly I am starting to see peoples true colours!!

^^^^^^^
This absoluley agree i moved yards 4 months ago and have realised the YM is very much like this. Does not agree with my TB recentley going barefoot (he cant possibly being a TB) does not agree with what i feed him (high fibre/forage lowest sugar possible) and does not agree with the bedding i use (Wood Pellet) and most certainly does not agree with alternative mumbo jumbo therapies/treatments!
She however has 3 horses all underweight with god awful feet ( One with navicular) whom she pumps full of competition mix for her daughter to compete on with bad backs and ill fitting saddles but hey she knows best......

On my old yard, yes, awful woman! Went round telling everyone one horse had ringworm (reaction to cream put on minor cut, actually), couldn't bandage so used old tights to keep her horses's feathers out of the way for the farrier, her way is the only way and she gets really annoyed if her advice isn't followed. Fortunately, there were far better qualified people than her there so we all ignored her crazy talk!

fatpiggy and marydoll you both hit the nail on the head, sadly you kinda get ropped in to helping in the beginning and then become the yard know it all without your doing.

i tend to find YO's can also be know it all's and sometimes i wish they would pay more attention to their own and not interfere esp when nothing is broke.

I would love to have the supreme confidence it takes to be a yard expert/know all, to be so certain that your way is the right and only way to address a problem or manage the care horse. That seems to be the recurrent theme with the experts I've dealt with in my time, most are harmless and mean well though and that is worth remembering, and sometimes they can be amusing.

I knew one once who would almost constantly berate my mare for her ground manners but this person's horse had WORSE manners by far and their method of dealing with it was to constantly shout the horse's name. If you spent a couple of hours with them and their horse on the yard you could understand where the horse was coming from and felt like kicking them yourself. Horse is still the same from what I can gather, and if it didn't know its name before it sure does now :)

....couldn't bandage so used old tights to keep her horses's feathers out of the way for the farrier,

:D Excellent and most practical idea, in fact it will almost certainly be listed in some thread or other for 'time saving ideas' .

Why bother with faffing about with bandages when slipping on a pair of tights does the job just as well and in a fraction of the time? Does she put tights over tails as well?

The stock replies to anyone who tries to stick their oar in and tell you what to do are:

"Is this your horse?"

"Do you want to buy this horse?"

"Thank you for your opinion, very interesting"

Or

"Oh p**s off" :o :D

I am so glad I am not the only person who thought great idea .

Fortunately there is no one like this at my current yard (unless it's me and I'm just unaware of it)

At previous yards I have come across these people. I find it best to smile and then go about your business.

Just a pondering. Would you all live and let live if someone on your yard was training the Parelli way?

Don't do it myself but just a thought.

Don't have a yard know it all but do have one lady who seems to think that because she has more money than anyone else that should give her special treatment.

I personally would live and let live, our yard has horse people who subscribe to a broad range of approaches, I might have an opinion of course but hopefully we could treat each other witj respect.

Given that the person on our yard who does Parelli is an instructor in it, an able rider and handler and the go-to person for handling and loading issues, I think I would live and let live - after all, I also have to do the same for the person who likes to beast her obese horse round and round the school in inappropriate tack until its wind is shot...

What happens on those occasions when the know-it-all is right? :D ;)

Yes.
I have.
His physical needs are my business, schooling and anything else is up to his owner, he isn't being hurt, or suffering, so it is nothing to do with me.

Yes, there's one on my yard as well. Avoid like the plague, no matter what the vet/farrier/EDT says, she has an opinion. No matter what ailment a horse has, she has experience of it. Nightmare!
Surely being very familiar with every aliment is proof in itself that their way is not working? ;)

Live and let live, there are 1001 ways of doing things and "not how I would" is not the same as wrong.
I don't think anyone would stand by idle while a horse was abused, but different is what makes the world go around.....sin as horse people we don't have any money left :p

My thoughts exactly - sounds wonderful and so much faster

There isn't one on my yard (unless it's me)
I'm pretty experienced in care and if asked will explain what I'd do in that situation and why and then let the person decide from there what they want to do

Yes definitely on the yard I'm on- in fact there are several who come out with some truly hair raising advice. For example horse who should be on 10 weeks box rest as per vets instruction- owner is telling everyone the vet knows nothing and is starting to ride horse 3 weeks into said box rest. Or the lady who says she doesn't believe in rugs or lotions and potions and that we are all ninnies for using any of the above- unfortunately her 2 horses suffer with terrible sweet itch and don't even get a spray of fly spray when they are turned out 24 hours a day and are rubbing themselves raw. These people really frustrate me- being a know it all is well and good until your horses start suffering.
