Once a mare gets to a certain age and has had more foals than one cares to think about.......

Is there any hope to get her belly in? Are horses like some human women and just not able to recover and stay stretched out for all of eternity?

I'd have thought with the correct diet and exercise the mare should be able to regain a nice shape.

The same could be said for most of us mothers. We all like to blame pregnancy, but for the most part it's our diet and lack of exercise which is tailoured in order to target those "problem areas" which is the cause for our mummy tummy.

I think it's more of a rib cage issue with horses. MoM was incredibly lean when she arrived with us. She still had a rib cage like a barrel and I know she had her last foal (of many) two yeas ago and had been working in a RS. She was certainly getting exercise and was on a pretty sparse diet, but nothing was going to change the expansion of her ribs. She looks much better now she has some padding on her butt to balance it.

My little Welsh pony is lami prone and is on very restricted rations and you can just about see her ribs but her actual tummy is huuuge where she has had too many foals poor thing (before we had her!) We dont ride her myuch but the physio said lots of carrots stretches and work in a pessoa type aid on lunge would help her lift her back and strenghten the tummy muscles and hopefully lift everything
