Hi, I was just wondering if i anyone knows any really good feeds or supplements to give to a horse thats struggling to put weight, condition and muscle on.
I am giving him at the moment equi jewel and muscle up by Global herbs.
I wouldnt say they are doing a bad job but was wondering if anyone has used anything else with terrific results.
I have used Build up supplement before as well.

Think you need to be patient. Feed little & often & ensure you are doing the right work with the horse in order to build up the correct muscle. Muscle will not build on the feed alone, you need to also be working the horse correctly.

Bailey Conditioning Cubes No 4 are good for building a horse up.

Also in hand work, long lining etc.

Is there an underlying reason why the horse is struggling to put weight and condition on?

As you can see from the first few replies everone has different ideas as to what they think you need to feed. By the end of the thread you will be more confused than ever.

I think that the best option is to contact one of the feed companies, Dodson & Horrell, Spillers, Baileys all have equine nutritionists who will answer any email questions you have. They will no 'rubbish' another companies products & give you quality advice. Tell them everything about your horse, his weight, type, exercise regime etc etc & you will get a comprehensive reply.

Good Luck

What ever you feed it will not happen overnight - as above I would contact the nutritionists at the major feed companies - Allen & Page, Dengie, Baileys, Dodson & Horrell and find not only what is going to work for your horse but what is going to work for you in terms of local availability/cost etc.

Is this for your stallions that you have just 'rescued' from the awful yard? If so you have to remember that they have taken a while to get in this state and will take a while to turn around - would also make sure that they have a good pre biotic and plenty of fibre rather than hard feed to really improve their gut function as that will encourage weight to go more effectively than just loads of hard feed which may add to his problems.

thankyou everyone,
Yes it is for one of the stallions that was rescued from the yard i sent them down to be prepared for either gradings, sale or competed. One of the stallions has got alot better however he was not as bad as the other. This stallion is doing well but he has alot of muscle wastage. He is only a baby and has only been backed so riding is not really something i can do with him plus i didnt want to put him in training so soon after been taken from the centre. He is out on good grass at the moment and is on hard feed as well and supplements. I know it does not come over night however i just wondered if there was somthing on the market that would give him a boost. My horses are on Sarecen horse feeds which by the way everyone check out because it is amazing!
The feed has put him weight on alot and he is much better however just wondered if there was anything else?

I think just time especially as he is now on good grazing - the grass will work wonders on him!! As he chills out and gets used to his new home etc he will come good - they had a bit of a trauma so it will take a while to become less stressy - the more relaxed he gets the better the improvement.

Maybe you could try some gentle excercise like taking for walks in hand or long reining - so not to stressful on his muscles and joints but would also help build his bond with you again which will make him less stressful to.

My friend swears by Copra Meal, her German WB was a very poor doer despite having loads of short feed and good grazing. She tried everything including Outshine, Build Up mixes, oils etc. The only thing that seemed to work was Boomerang Copra Meal, he now looks fab and she's proud to ride him out in public!

time and more time proper excersice. a good feed is ready mash extra alfa a oil anda supplement called fernugen seed very high in protin and oils!

Equimins Advanced System!

My horse that was getting a scoop of conditioning nuts, a scoop of conditioning mix and half a scoop of competition mix twice aday is now on chaff and this supplement and is putting on condition

Iv checked out Equimins and it does seem great and i carnt believe they offer a full money back system if you dont see condition on in 2 months. They give you all your money back on how ever many tubs you got no questions asked.
They must be confident with the product.
How long did it take for you to notice a diffrence and how much do you use in your feed and how long does the tub last?
