Is there any way to tell if an ankle is fractured...

Good Luck.
However, I fractured mine and managed to hobble around for nearly two weeks!

I had an xray 2 days after injury and was told it was ok, then received a letter 7 days later asking me to go back the following day to be told it was fractured and I was plastered! A few days later though I managed to swap for an AirCast Boot.

Poke it and see if it really hurts? :p Failing that get in a car and get some one to drive over a speed bump, if you want to punch them for going to fast its possibly broken .

Sister drove me to A&E, with my foot on a pillow. I had a pretty good idea that the ankle was broken. The only really painful part was after arrival at hospital, sis got me a wheelchair and to get in through the door we had to go over a drain-cover - now that did hurt!
The ankle needed a plate and 9 screws to hold it in place.

I'm afraid I'd get someone else to drive me to a different hospital - one that does have A&E open 24 hrs. The trouble with waiting with a fracture is that you may then have to wait for days for the swelling to go down, so that they can operate if it needs that.
Good luck!

Thanks all.
Been to the local hospital, who tell me that their X ray dept is only open 10 - 4pm on a Sun.
They said that I have 'indicators of a fracture' under the Ottawa rules, bandaged it, gave me crutches and told me to come back tomorrow for X rays.
I really can't afford for it to be fractured at the moment; wish me luck tomorrow.

WHAT DID YOU DO NOW?!?;)

Bugger. But if it's any consolation, my sports physio friend says a fracture will heal faster than a bad sprain... mostly cos if it's broken, they'll stabilise it with plaster, but sprains (until recently) have been left to 'heal themselves'.

Either way, good luck tomorrow. x

Sorry for my previous comment :rolleyes:

Sadly there is no 'good time' to fracture an ankle :) If its any consolation I have had a couple of bad sprains that presented like fractures until x-rayed, so you might be lucky yet.

The thought of a daemon on box rest is.. well... horrific to say the least.

Was it facing the wrong way with an extra joint in your leg before you had it bandaged? can you do thread the needle without the need for a horse or saddle? That's a good indicator in my experience. ;) On a more serious note, your quality of sleep tonight should tell you - mine had me yelling morphene several times through the night because some stupid body reaction to a break means your legs twitch and pull the sodding break apart, even with it in a clunky cast

Hope its just a silly sprain. x

Id go, I walked around on a fractured ankle all day huffing and puffing it was sprained. After being abducted and taken to A&E I was told it was fractured- oops.

Glad its not broken but if you are avoiding all the things listed could we perhaps have pictures of you doing the moving chores while levitating and floating above the ground. also please make sure you wear a hard hat in case you float too high and bash your head on the ceiling :D

So pleased for you. I broke my talus in my ankle a few years back. They couldn't tell me for about six weeks if the bone would die and leave me unable to ever walk again. Was the most depressing, scary time of my life.
