Nemo had the same thing happen to him. Huge, deep gash to his knee right down to the bone, which turned septic in the joint. Had surgery at Rossdales, joint flushing etc. He had to stay there for 3 weeks. Only needed 4 weeks box rest, which I dreaded as he lives out 24/7, but he actually seemed to enjoy it! Vet came out 2 to 3 times a week to redress the wound, which healed nicely. He did get A nasty sore from the bandage at the back of his knee though.
This was a very nasty wound (words of vet) and it is quite likely he will suffer from arthritis in it later in life. However, Nemo has made a full recovery, with minimal scarring (a few white hairs, but mainly from resulting sore).
He wasn't remotely lame following his 4 weeks box rest (well 7 weeks if you count time at horsepital

Whoops hadn't quite finished my ramble...
What I'm trying to say is good luck for your horse, mine made a full recovery very swiftly and I hope yours does too. If you can see my signature, that is Nemo with his bandage on :)

Thankyou everyone. I'm exhausted but she's awake again. So that's step 1 I guess. Now just loads more steps to go x

I hope all continues to progress well. I had a 2yo with a punture wound to his fetlock - synovial fluid leaking, deep mud and inevitably infection... the lot. He made a complete recovery, is now rising 6 and has never has a problem with it. Cosmetically you'd never know either.

(Not that it made any difference to him trying to saw one of his other legs off in a gate last year. Not so pretty that one. :( Although he's absolutely fine on it now.)

That's promising then avonbrook. Her would is tiny. Like literally the size of a thick needle (like for microchipping) hole. Even the vet nurses were saying what a crazy situation for such a tiny injury.

The gate sounds nasty, glad he's better now
