Hi, im having a right 'mare as it is.
basically i loaned one of my horses to what seemed to be a lovely mother/daughter home earlier this year, i usually prefer 6month loans in my locality so i can keep an estranged watch, but these people were so lovely and seemingly very knowledgeable, (they came up for a month and came to see her every day, they were very committed) that i allowed them to take her to their home which is about 3 hours away.
anyway they have had her for 4 months, and weve constantly been in touch and according to them she is going great guns. the mare is quiet, enthusiastic and a fantastic eventing/hunting horse, polite, loving, perfect really.

well, last night i got home to find a trailer parked outside my yard gates, and hey presto my beloved pony is stood in the freezing cold with no food or water in the back. i dont know how long she'd been there. anyway she is in a terrible state. i try to unload her and she is terrified, with help i get her into a stable and as soon as she sees her water she drinks for england and then digs into her hay the same way, the poor thing starts everytime she hears a noise and when i walked my others past her this morning she went crazy and almost kicked the wall through. its heartbreaking.

ive been calling the people who took her all night and day long, and i cant get through to any of their numbers, and im planning to drive down to the address they gave me and have been recieveing post from. is there anything i can do, sorry about the essay but im in real trouble.
 
im so so sorry - how horrible!!! Im so sorryt here are such nasty brutish people int his world.
At least she is now with you - give her lots of hugs and cuddles from me - so sorry - and i hope you do find the people who did this and give them what for xxx
 
Why would you drive down to their place? Cut your losses and move on., At least they have returned her and not just sold her on. What else can you get from them now?

What and let, the people who mistreated her, off scot free!?!? and possibly do the same with another horse.:eek:
Can you honestly say if your horse returned in this way, you wouldn't want something to be done?

Exactly! and if they contact you saying they want their trailer back tell them to get lost!

Unfortunately there are alot of irresponsible and selfish people about. At least you got your mare back and she didn't end up at some dealers yard or meat market.
 
Try to be patient and let the dust settle for a few days and then maybe try and get hold of them. That way they might think you have given up trying to contact them. Failing that you could always write them a letter!
 
You're quite right to want an explanation, but PLEASE don't go there on your own. Take one or two people with you. They sound a total disgrace.

If you want a nice revenge, tell the local newspaper in their area! People don't like being named and shame, and it may save some other horse from ending up with them.

I'm sure your mare will recover, but it'll take time and patience and lots of TLC.

Did they just unhitch the trailer and leave it there with her in it? :confused:

Leave them a message saying that unless they phone you back by tomorrow and explain their actions - you will be driving down there to speak to them face to face and that you will be taking advice about what you can do to make them pay for what they have done.

Could have been a domestic :( Imagine pony being returned amongst arguing etc, would explain why shes so nervy and supposedly dumped. Families can be funny things sometimes, at least they brought her home despite being left so ignorantly. I hope you get to speak to them, what a shame. Hope pony recovers quickly poor thing, they are such sensitive souls :(
 
How awful!Sorry you've had to go through this.
As regards to contacting them, Did you get the passport (and tack etc)back if they had it. If not surely she is obliged to try and get it back and therefore has a genuine reason to contact them, or get help contacting them (police) as they are holding on to your property?
 
I would be furious too and would probably want to confront them about it but like others have said at least they didn't sell her or dump her somewhere else or disappear whilst they still had her. I'm sure with some TLC she will get back to her old self.
 
Sell the trailer straight away if they contact you say you have used the money on her recovery dont waste your time in pointless arguments with them by the way they have behaved it shows what kind of people they are.

It will only stress you to pursue them with nothing for you to gain by doing so, chalk it up to experience and concentrate on your horses you just have to console yourself with the fact you have her back and it could have ended up worse than it did i am sure with a bit of tlc she will settle back in.
 
Why would you want to drive a 6hr round trip just to have an arguement? They're not going ot pay compensation. You can't force them to tell you anything. Your going to spend what, near a hundred quid plus waster time on petrol?
Move on, **** happens. Don't loan that far away again. What if they've moved when you get there?

You have to pony back. Which to me is great. I have heard of so many people who have had to fight to get loaned horses back once they are being neglected!

Yes they were shocking owners. Yes she deserved better! But arguing with them isnt going to change what has already happened.

My advice would be sell trailer for your trouble. Leave answer phone message telling the how disgusting they have been if it makes you feel better.

Then move on and concentrate on gaining poor pony's trust again and get her back to full health.

I know its heartbreaking and understand you feel very angry. But at least she is back home safe now.

she was such a good girl you know, never marish, such a pleasure, never phazed by anything. its taken some doing to get her terrified. im leaving her a couple of days and then i will try moving her into one of the paddocks by my house, its quiet and near to us.

i am so mad right now, my husband literally took my car keys because he knew i would have gone down to them tonight. they were so lovely, such nice people. if they were having problems they could have called but i spoke to them last sunday and she was raving about how well she had hunted. i cant believe they lied.

and yes, they had unhitched the trailer, removed the plates and gone, no note nothing.
 
I'm with SusieT on this, why waste your time, effort and money on a journey that may or may not result in you finding the loaners.

I'd chalk it up to a (bad) experience, sell the trailer and move on.
 
I'd be trying to find out if you can have them prosecuted for cruelty or neglect for leaving an animal without food or water locked in an unhitched, abandoned trailer.

So pleased she is back safe with you, what could of happened just doesn't bear thinking about.

Personally I wouldn't drive down to confront them I don't think it will achieve anything other to upset you further.
 
Bloody hell what a situation. Thank goodness you got her back though. Have you got her passport/tack back though? I would get her checked by the vet. I would ring them, asking why she has been returned and in such a state, and ask for her passport back asap. I would tell them that you will be selling the trailer to cover vet costs etc, as you presume it has been given to you as left on your property. I would want answers, at least to find out if and what has happened to the mare. Tread carefully, you need to speak to them about mare's welfare but at least she is home. Maybe contact BHS for advice?
 
I think I would concentrate on the fact they sent her back to you. There are so many people out there that wouldn't have.
 
Im really suprised at the amount of people who would take this "lying down". Im not sure what you can do but I would want to do something. Did you have a formal legal loan agreement - presumably they agreed to look after her properly and give notice if they were going to return her? If you cant use this agreement if things go wrong, what is the point of having them in the first place?

I had a bad experience with a loan many years ago and found my pony in a stable with no food, starving, eating shavings, took her away immediatly and had large vet bill as a result of their neglect. I didnt do anything (other than shout and cry at the loaners) and I had also thoroughly checked them out, visited regularly etc but you do feel you cant be breathing down people's necks all the time and you have to leave them to enjoy the pony... sadly these things seem to happen alarmingly regularly :(
