Is there ANYTHING i can do???

I am so sorry for you and your poor mare, she sounds like a total sweetheart.

I am sure she will fully recover from this and be back to her usual self in no time. But it does make me sick as there is no need for this to have happened in the first place.

I would keep the trailer and sell it for sure! I cant see how they would have the bare faced cheek to claim it!

Are you a BHS member? It might be worth giving thier legal department a call before selling the trailer.
I agree with others who say it's just not worth a 6 hour drive. What will this achieve? (apart from you getting really worked up, even more than you are now)
At least they have returned your horse which is a saving grace.
try to calm down and work on getting your horse back to normal.
 
All sounds a bit odd to me, like someone else said maybe it was a domestic & the horse was bought back in temper? Don't any of you think its a bit weird to not only dump the horse but the trailer as well, even if its an old one (op doesn't say) its probably still worth a few hundred. Sound to me like a husband & wife falling out & the husband has done this as getting his own back, & lets face it if you were in their shoes & that's what happened would you answer the phone? I know i wouldn't out of sheer embarrassment.

I have to admit though if i were you i would want answers, i couldn't just leave it rest, i know some people would find it strange to want answers but sadly its in some peoples natures to question things, where as others are happy with what it put in front of them. I like to dissect a situation till i get to the bottom of it, i certainly couldn't leave this lie.
 
Please get an Incident number
Take note of serial number on the front of the trailer--should be on a plate and stamped into the metal--mine is 17 digits--give that to Police.
Do not risk being a party to selling possible stolen goods

Take their advice but suggest you write formally (recorded delivery) to the effect the trailer will be sold in ....days to pay to put the pony back in original body condition.

I can understand your wish to 'wipe the floor with them' but not sure what it will achieve
 
thankyou for all the replies, today my girl is much better, i think she finally realises she is home and safe and is already wanting to get in with some of the minis.

i did a lot of calling people today, givng out her name and explaining what she had done. the woman who put her through to me originally now is aware too.
it is alarming how often this type of thing happens.

my plan is to leave it until next year when i have a trip planned to visit someone less than 30 minutes from where the woman and her daughter live, and i will be paying her a visit.
 
Get your horse looked at by a vet asap .... whats to say the mare hasn't been injured and is now unrideable and thus returned??
Not something you want to find out 6 months down the line when it's too late

Also agree about informing the police and the trailer serial number. You do not want to be the one who sold stolen property.
 
my vet just happens to be the man im married to (with my collection of waifs and stray it was obviously planned ;)) and weve agreed to leave her until she is ready for him to go near her, as she is still very jumpy.

ive checked the trailer, and as far as it goes the police dont say its stolen, but its a refurb job.

Check with the BHS as suggested, and the police, and get everything you want to say nailed down in formal, word perfect detail. Also, get the vet to check her over and give you something written. In the letter you can also quote the relevant parts of the loan agreement. No big emotions, just the facts and all the legal/vet details you have on paper. Don't do anything that could lead to you being seen as threatening or harassing.

I apologise but I haven't read all the reply's (should be cooking dinner:o) If I were you I would contact your local police and let them know as I think Trailers have documents and this could turn nasty if they change their minds and want it back. I don't think you can sell it as you don't actually own it. BHS could probably give you some legal advice.

How awful - and I echo the others who say it's to be hoped they haven't injured her. You must feel sick to your boots over how she has felt and I really hope there's no lasting damage done. I'm wondering if there is any foolproof way of ensuring a loan horse is well looked after. Our loan out is a regular PC pony so the DC would be straight on the phone if there were untoward things going on. Plus, she is only 12 miles from here.

However, I have to return a horse which has been on loan to us for almost two years. I think I'll take photo's just before she is loaded onto the transport back to her owner with close-ups of her feet, bodily condition and the items I am returning with her. Just in case!
