I'm really surprised you found it that dusty! It can definitely be a bit dusty to lay a new bale, but when mixed with some of the old bed, there is no dust in the stable (for me anyway).
That said, some people at the yard have said that you can occasionally get bad batches that are extremely dusty, so possibly there's an issue with consistency?
Possibly but honestly never seen dust like it. It was dustier than any "normal" bedding I've ever used never mind this was supposed to be dust extracted.
After half putting down a bale we had to go outsode and gasp for air and drink from the hose. I bought a pallet from a bedding distributor and it was all 40 bales ?
You could see a cloud of dust hanging. Couldnt afford not to use it so had to alter the routine to ensure beds were done early so they settled before the horses came in. Especially since one had asthma.
I usually avoid naming brands because I dont want any repercussions but this brand was beyond awful.
I used to use "normal" shavings then went onto bedmax. I noticed much less dust with them but I didnt really like them as a bed.
I've used wood pellets on and off for years but find them dusty too. I tried with them as a base and bedmax on top for a while.
Next I moved onto nedz pro and it was brilliant. No dust, absorbent and saved a fortune. Once a bed is laid I only need 1/2 to 1 bale a week top up.
In the last batch of 40 I've had a lot of contaminated bales with various things through quite a few bales. One was a heap of tiny bits of hard plastic and given that my nuckheap is spread I'm not happy about this. We picked out as much as we can but there were thousands of bits. However after putting a new bale down I found a sharp bit of pointy, rusty, twisted wire. If a horse had stood on it then it could have been game over. I dont know why the quality has been non existent in this batch.
I trialled a bad of chopped rape and it was lovely but they only do a minimum order of 150 bales and after a weekend of sorting the shed there just isnt space at the moment. @spacefaer has kindly shared the details of her supplier and he will send pallets of 25 so we ordered a pallet to try.
