Is this a good idea?

The horses are getting hungry as there is no grass left, 2 of the other liveries have started bringing there horses in for a haynet twice a day.
So tomorrow I'm going shopping.
I remember once working on a yard where one of the ponies was given a full bucket of chaff that was soaked, (think it had allergies) and was thinking of doing this instead of feeding hay.
That way I don't have to buy hay until they come in.
Does this sound like an ok idea?

yep you can do that and also add in a mineral and vit supplement

thats what I feed my mare in her starvation paddock

also I'd get some hay in now, think the price will go up soon

what sort of supplement? I've never fed supplements before (unless you count garlic, coz I liked the smell lol)
I didn't realise the price would go up :S thats not too good, will buy some tomorrow then

I give my little Shetland in her almost bare paddock a couple of trugs of Hi-Fi Lite, according to grass growth. I also start bringing my horse in for a hay net for a couple of hours (usually evenings) at this time of year. We do put hay out 24/7 in the field, but only when the temperature drops and there is no grass. The horses all live out 24/7 so the hay forms the main part of their diet.

Hi-Fi Lite is good - have used it for years. Although, have not fed it on its own, just as a bulker to a very small amount of short feed. My old girl (23) has thrived on this combination for many years.

I think it depends on how well your horse does on what you feed it (0bvious - sorry!). However, I did speak to the D & H people at Burghley and asked them if I should change my mare's feed (Hi-Fi Lite & D & H Leisure Mix) and they said if she is OK on this then "if it ain't broke - then don't fix it". BTW, she is on Benevit V & M supplement during the Autumn/Winter time.

She looks very (too) well!

Bloody expensive way to do it!

A bag of readigrass/hifi or similar is £12 or so - and it's only lasts 2-3 days if fed as a hay replacer. A big bale of hay is £25 and will last at least 2weeks, even adlib.

I would love to feed readigrass (dried grass) as a full hay replacer over the winter (be so much eaiser and less messy) but there's not way I could afford it, esp for 2 horses!.
