Can't believe I was just so stupid, also cant really believe the dog bothered with this but I just came across to the house loaded up with my tack and a pile of other bits and pieces including my riding hat which i thought as we are away this weekend I'd give a bit of a scrub to freshen up and leave to dry.
Dumped it all on the floor to unlock the door, let the dogs out and next second Bertie is bouncing round the garden with my bl**dy hat in his mouth.
Normally I would tell him to drop but tried to get him onto the grass first....no such luck, he took one look at me and knew he had something he shouldn't so dropped in on the concrete instead, then waited to be told he was good 😄
He just has to carry something, I suppose I'm lucky it wasn't my saddle!

So its only been dropped from labrador height- That'll be ok surely

Yep, in construction a fall from height used to be classed as 2m but since 2005 it is a fall from any height.

Its the EPS (expanded polystyrene) inside the riding hat that is affected, that's the bit between the inner and outer shell. The EPS is energy absorbing beads which burst under impact so they absorb and dissipate impact to the skull and won't have the same level of protection afterwards.

Its a bummer, especially if you have spent £££'s on a hat!

If it's expensive might a new one be covered in home insurance as pet damage?
I have no idea actually, It really was my own fault though.
A new one wont cost me a fortune as I'm too scared to buy anything other than the one i have as i get awful head aches with pro fitted ones! This one was fitted (well about 3 hats ago) but the shop is closed and its the first hat I've been able to wear longer than 20 minutes comfortably so i just buy like for like online.

I'm going to out on a limb here & as we all say, an impact means a new hat.
But as @Birker2020 said above, the damage is due to compression of the impact absorbing layer in the hat.
BUT if there was no head inside the hat, the compression wouldn't happen.
So is this something we need to ask the hat makers? I'd be gutted to knock my hat over 1 foot off the ground & have to spend £200 on a new one.
Worth discussion?

It is just me that would keep using the hat lab height is like what 30cm with only the weight of the hat on impact? (not that I would advise someone against buying a new one) you've thought it was hard enough to write this post though I suppose... cant put a price on safety but would personally still use. i mean Ive bashed my head against the side of a stable, left it to be rumbled around in a tack box and probably dropped it myself at some point with my last hat.. which I replaced at 2year mark in may as it was scratched to bits. Maybe Im mistaken to assume a hat can take a little bit of general wear...

Honestly , I might drop my hat myself from the back of the car and wouldn’t dream of replacing it !!! It’s not the same as falling off a horse with your head in it, it will be fine - just crack on !

I had a fall on Sunday. I didn't think I had hit my head but I have since seen a bruise on my chin and my nose is skinned and I don't remember hitting my face so I have bought a new hat just in case. The new one has mips.

Wasn't there a post on here a while back where someone was in a store and a store assistant dropped a new (unsold) hat in the shop and they said that manufacturers say that a fall from hand / hip height, with no head inside, didn't affect the safety of the helmet.

It might be worth an email to the manufacturer to see if they would recommend a replacement.
