Although lots of people have advised me against including the hay and straw on DIY, i dont really have any other option as we dont have enough storage space. SO....thinking of charging £165 pcm DIY for large stable and fields, all weather (soon to be resurfaced) floodlit menage, good hacking, ad lib hay and straw. Does this sound reasonable?

Also your thoughts on how many large round bales of hay and straw your horse gets through - i have based the calculations on what i use, but i could be wildly over/under estimating! Thanks..!

depends whereabouts in the country you are, but where i am ( south east) i would say that was reasonable

ditto what digitalangel said in the southeast that would be reasonable (i estimated that i would probably get through approx £65 a month hay and straw). Where i am at uni though (east midlands) i would say thats a bit steep, simply because around me there are hundreds of yards and so loads of competition!

I paid £250 in the south east and that was cheap for where I am, other places charge £200 not including hay and straw.

I paid £100 pcm for DIY including as much haylage as I needed, and unlimited straw. If you had shavings you had to provide them yourself. This was in Suffolk.

When I looked at yards in Sussex 6 months ago, I was quote £30 p/w for DIY with hay included but no bedding.

squeak where are you?! In watford for £100pcm (£130 when i manage to bag a bigger stable with storage in the back) i get an international sized all weather outdoor school with floodlights, stable and grazing - as well as a locked tackroom, storage for stuff etc! Is yours completley DIY or assisted with turnouts etc?

Is that for DIY? Id be quite interested to know what facilities you have for that money?

Id say £140-£160 would be a good price.

For where I am that would probably be on expensive side but I am in Cheshire. My last bill including hay and straw for two horses and rent was about £230. But if I was on ad lib straw I would probably use a lot more as I am very careful with mucking out and they are on rubber matting. They have ad lib hay already so wouldn't use more of that.

In Somerset and just over the border in Wiltshire hay/straw included in DIY livery is £35 a week. One yard has amazing facilities, horsewalker, 2 schools, 2 sets of gallops, xc course, free lights in the indoor. The 2nd yard has one school - outdoor but lit, xc course and both had barn stabling,

I'm in Surrey and I pay £156 for field & stable, school is unusable, hacking is good but you have to go along busy road to get there and that doesn't include any hay or bedding. And YO keeps telling us liveries that she's good value for money! The only reason I stay is because I can leave my boys out 24/7 all year round and there's no mud!

I'm on DIY with a 20x60 outdoor and a small indoor. I pay for hay/haylage and bedding as I use it. Your price is about what I'd be paying in the winter if I bedded on straw but I'd think it a bit steep in the summer when my hay and bedidng usage halves. I'm in Cheshire.

Our yard hasn't got enough storage for everyone to have their own hay forage and bedding supplies/stores. YO buys it in and stores it in the barn. We take what we need and pay for what we've taken on a weekly basis - could that work for you?

I am in the north and I pay £27 per week for DIY livery which includes good quality hay and straw. We have tonnes of grazing, have two fields per herd for rotation, farmer harrows and fertilises as we come off a field, really good fencing, auto-matic troughs inside and out, large stables, two yards - an indoor barn yard and an older fashioned outdoor crew yard, a lunge sand ring, a small jumping paddock which ISN'T surfaced and a small cross country course all the way around the fields.

We have really good hacking, and our favourite hack is down to the river bank to the pub so while our horses graze, we lay out on the bank, soak up the sun (phaaaa what is that???) and have a cheeky one! xx

ETA: We use big large round bales. The farmer said that he tightly packs his, and so on average it would be similar amount to 8 small bales of straw to one of his big round bales. He said minimum for a large round bale would be 6 small bales, but I guess it depends how well packed the farmer does them! I hope this helps xx

Im on DIY in Suffolk and I pay £110 for the stable, all year turn out and all weather out door arena and sand arena and of road hacking location. Straw and halage and feed is avalible on site but extra cost of my bill usually £160 a month but I use loads of bedding. so to me thats a fab price

I'm in the East Midlands (Leic/Notts border) and pay £44 a week for livery with Hay/Straw included and use of a 30x50m rubber surface. There is a HUGE gap in the market for good livery yards around us

BUT I love the yard I am on now

so it's worth it!

KatB me too (leics/notts border) where are you stabled?? can PM if you prefer. At old yard on DIY it worked out to £100 a month with all haylage, shavings and stable/grazing/sandschool/jumping paddock and XC course, but moved for a better school. Would love to go back on DIY but couldnt find a yard! Am on part now, £75 a week all inc mon-fri everything done

My last yard was £115 for diy with massive stable, individual paddock with all year turnout, 20 x 40 floodlit school with jumps and brilliant hacking on the doorstep. That included unlimited hay / haylage made on the farm.

It was £140 a month if you wanted unlimited straw as well.

One friend pays £110 (calender month)for stable, individual turnout, indoor and outdoor school cross country course. Another pays £50 (week) for stable, limited grazing, indoor and outdoor school horse walker.I pay £20 (week) for stable, limited grazing, indoor school. All three include ad lib hay and straw.

I guess it's all quite subjective...oh well..no one has recoiled in horror so i shall start at that price and if a month down the line i have no liveries...i guess i'm charging too much - if i'm full to burst prob charging too little

Where abouts in the south east are you? pm me if you prefer.

Where I am thats a reasonable price and I would be happy paying that. Yards around here cost between £125-£220 DIY per month with similar facilities not including hay or bedding.
I wouldnt be surprised if you needed to up your cost actually because you may find you spend more on hay then your getting back. My horse is eating a good bale to bale and a half of hay per day at the mo! At £3.50 per bale or nearly £100 per month, Its my biggest expense!

Am at Snowysadude's old DIY yard in the East Midlands but pay a bit more as ours is in a big stable and we're very generous with his bed (no rubber matting) so use one giant bale (= 12 small bales) plus one and a half giant bales of hay (getting thro lot of hay at the present!!) per month during the winter. We pay £70 p.m. for stable & grazing only. I think that is very reasonable as there is a sandschool (unfortunately out of use due to weather), jumping paddock and cross-country course plus nearby off-road hacking. Our hay/straw bill is approx. £50 p.m. in winter. There's a huge variance around the country so you can only gauge it against those yards in the same area.
