As title, do you know what this is? It's been there a couple of months now, possibly longer, but hidden by winter coat maybe and not noticed when I bought him.
Thanks for any help :)

Yes that looks like the second sarcoid my boy got, it was tiny (his first one was huge), and easy to get rid of. He had two courses of liverpool cream treatment on it, the first one made it flare up a bit but the second one saw it off and it's not come back (that was over a year ago now).

I hope not because my mare has got alot of these around her udder area only just started appearing, I'm hoping they are bad fly bites which will hopefully go down:(

Yes thats how my boys arcoid started.Ask your vet for some Blood Root Cream.Works wonders. That sarcoid will grow bigger if not treated. My boy had a lump like that and I thought it was a bite, left it a few weeks and it started growing. still has his but it is shrinking now.
Please get it checked out!!!

It may be: always worth a vet having a look. There are creams that you can get that really help-Fucibet (main ingredient fusidic acid) is prescription only for humans but if you know a friendly pharmacist then you could perhaps get some. It appears to have almost cleared a friend's youngster's sarcoid.

Any cream with bloodroot in it is apparently also excellent.

It's definitely not a fly bite, as has been there for a couple of months. The discolouration of the hair surrounding it is a little bigger than about the size of a £2 coin.
the little black hard lump came off recently - he must have knocked it or something, but it has now grown back again.
Is Liverpool cream only available from the vet? Is there something else I can use, or should I definitely get the vet to look at it? If it is the 'start' of a sarcoid, is it likely to grow much bigger, or is that a 'how long is a piece of string' question?
Thanks again for your help!

i would get the vet to look and send the photos off.

if it is a sarcoid i wouldn't go down any other route other than Liverpool cream- you can make sarcoids a lot worse with some 'apparent remedies.'

Sarc-off (like Liverpool cream) contains blood root and is vet recommended, not an apparent remedy. I used Liverpool cream myself but it can be quite vicious.

Sarc-off is recommended by certain vets, not all.

Liverpool cream is very vicious and toxic- hence it's high success rate on sarcoids.

i was thinking more along the lines of people suggesting Aloe Vera etc which sometimes happens and is one of the worst things you can put on a sarcoid.

When you say "can be quite vicious", what do you mean??

liverpool cream is extremely toxic (can only be applied by a vet and you must wear gloves).

if applied to skin without sarcoids (or rubbed there by accident) is basically burns the skin off so when it is applied make sure all surrounding areas are covered in vaseline or sudocreme or similar as a barrier.

OP, looking at the pics again you may be able to band that one off if it is a sarcoid?

It may be a sarcoid - my boy has a verrucose one with a similar halo round it - but I would ask your vet to have a look and confirm. Prof Knottenbelt at Liverpool Uni has a very informative website which may be useful to you. IMHO I'd be wary of using anything other that something prescribed specifically by your vet, and agree with Millitiger re Liverpool cream - it seems that other remedies can aggravate the sarcoid and make it more difficult to treat. I am currently waiting for a treatment protocol from Liverpool Uni, and there is quite a backlog of cases apparently. My insurers will only pay for the treatment for 12 months from the time the sarcoid was first spotted, and as it can be expensive (highly toxic therefore can only be applied by a vet and may require sedation to apply) it may be worth calling your vet sooner rather than later - I was in complete denial about mine and have ended up using up 3 of my '12 months insured treatment' hoping it would disappear and waiting for the cream to arrive!! Best of luck!

I am using Blood root cream and also have to apply a layer of vasaline arount the rim to avoid burning the skin.Seems to be a very slow process getting rid of the Sarcoid but it has shrunk a lot,so hopefully it will drop off.

You should get your vet to check the lump!!!

def get that vet checked, looks like a sarcoid. Have you posted this in the vet forum too, they are fab at stuff like this.

Hope it goes ok, sm x

Livepool cream is essentially a topical chemotherapy for sarcoids. Its is horrid stuff, but very effective. The sarcoid is essentially a form of cancer caused by a virus, hence the use of chemotherapy, and hence how essential it is to get them treated properly. The virus is Bovine Papilloma Virus, carried by cow flies, but some horses never seem to be affected while others are very prone to it!

My sisters horse had 3 sarcoids (2 small on his chest, and one large on his neck) treated just over 2 years ago. the 2 small ones came off almost immediately after the second application. The larger one hung about for a bit longer and came off when his coat changed that winter. I can't find any sign of the two small ones now, and the skin where the larger one was is slightly thickened like an old scar but nothing more, and the hair is still black.

He also has some warts on his sheath, but the vet has biopsied them and says they are definitely warts not sarcoids and he puts ligature (cat gut ties) on them when he comes for routine stuff and they drop off in a few days.

To me, the pics look more like a wart than a sarcoid, but definitely worth getting the vet to check it out!

Thank you all for your great replies. I have just spoken to vet reception and they are happy for me to email pics.
Will also post in vet forum for opinions and try to stop worrying! :)
