Met up with a pal and went for a walk last weekend, we were crossing a car park when I noticed a car driving out and said to my friend: "Oh no, that woman has shut her dog's lead in the boot door."
My friend said that she knows of people who do this, presumably to keep the dog from climbing into the body of the car over the back seats? There was also a metal dog guard in the car.
Does people routinely this? I dread to think what would happen in the event of an accident, the poor thing could end up being decapitated. Or am I just over-reacting....

I've not seen it done for a long time but yes, it is something people do.

I think its done much less now as generally it seems much easier to get a create or dog guard to fit most makes/models of car.

Isn't it now a requirement that either the car is fitted with a grill behind the front seats, or that the dog wears a harness that is fixed to the seat belt anchor points, so that in the event of a collision the dog can't be thrown forwards against the driver's or passenger's head?

The dog should be restrained in some form and not loose in the body of the car, you can get done for it and I know someone who got a fixed penalty for having the dog loose in the cab of his van.

If they haven't got a full cage or tailgate guard it's probably so they can have hold of the end of the lead before opening the boot, in case the occupant bogs off as soon as they open it.

We're car hunting at the moment and I don't care a jot what the car is like but have been unreasonably excited by caging options. :p

I bought my car specifically because I could fit a crash safe crate in the boot
