is this an abscess?

Looking for opinions on whether the conditions of theses hooves are a welfare concern? This is not my horse but I am concerned in the condition of his hooves. Not sure what has caused the massive hole, never seen an abscess burst through the wall like that?

I can't see the photos well enough, but so you know - an abscess doesn't burst through the hoof wall. It can burst at the coronet and then would grow out as the hoof grows down.

Abscesses often burst at the coronary band, and then as they grow down they leave a horizontal split in the wall. Your pic shows a much bigger split than I've come across, but I guess it could still be a very large abscess, that burst about three months ago?
The hooves don't look in the best of condition, but hard to judge for certain from photos
