I have a cob on loan who came in a fulmer snaffle with keepers, a flash and a running martingale. He has a white muzzle and on one side the hair is rubbed off from the flash and I think the full cheek of the bit. I'm trying different bit/noseband combinations so stop this rubbing but also because I'm not sure he really needs the flash. He does open his mouth to evade but I'm thinking a change of bit and some schooling rather than clamping his mouth shut with the flash is a better idea?! Any advise, or anyone use the above bit? Thanks.

It looks similar to a NS bit I use on both of mine......the highland has been a nightmare to bit as he gets his tongue over everything and tries to evade.....the shape of the bit gives him plenty of room and he is actually now 100% better. His previous owner used a flash but personally I dont like them....if they are trying to evade there must be a reason and I agree that clamping the mouth shut just treats the symptom, not the cause. Also....get his teeth checked if they havnt been done in the last 6m.....my boy had his done at the weekend and they were a little sharp, even though he wasn't overdue and that has helped enormously also.

ps.....my view only, I'm no expert.:)

Thanks, his teeth were done in Feb. Do you think its worth shelling out that little bit extra for a neue schule? I might try one from the bit bank, heard great things about them but they are so expensive.

i have the universal gag in it the same mouth pice shape as ns but i also have the ns universal gag an he goes alot better not sur if it is the metal or the fact he has a curb strap with it :) not much help

I like that bit, it suits my mare v well (large sensitive tongue, not fab schooling and rather a sensitive madam!). Itis comfy for her with the shaped mouthpiece and lozenge, and the cheeks help remind her of the direction I'm asking for when she is being gobby!

I've just bitten the bullet and ordered a neue schule to trial, if its any good I'll keep it but won't tell the OH what it cost and if it doesn't suit it'll go back pronto!

I have both versions - the lozenge baucher in Cotswold's german silver and the NS one. Both horses improved in the german silver when going straight from a normal stainless steel one, but went so much better again in the NS and tbh I wouldn't use anything different in their mouths.
