Is this expensive for clipping?

Ive been looking for someone to clip my cobs feathers and just tidy her jaw line etc. Ive been quoted 25 pounds for this which I feel is expensive. what do others think please. ps im in the midlands.I have not got much idea on clipping prices so it might be ok but just seemed quite a lot for a small job!
 
If person has to come out to you then travel costs and time have to be considered. Also remember that feathers kill clipper blades so they will need re-sharpening once done.
£25 seems reasonable to me.
 
I was quoted £15 for a bib clip by someone at my yard so no travel, and as above after doing feathers they will need their blades sharpened again :)

I would say thats reasonable! :D

Thanks for the replys, I dont know much about clipping as I said, its quite local so not much travelling time etc.
Didnt think about the blades.
 
What you have to consider is travelling costs, time to do the job and wear and tear on the kit.

Realistically, you are looking at roughly 40p-50p per mile (each way) and about 1/2-3/4 hour to do the job (provided your horse behaves) If it is an hour and a half out of their day in total including travelling how much are they paying themselves an hour ?

£5 travelling cost if they have to come 5 miles, £10-£15 labour (inc travelling time) and a fiver for wear and tear on the clippers.

You could probably barter them down substantially if they are doing another horse on the yard, but asking them to work for less than minimum wage is really asking them to do it for mates rates. Clipping a whole horse would only add on an extra half an hour as its these fiddly bits which take the time.

I'd say £20 is a fair price but it depends on how far they are having to travel.
 
The lady that does my horse charges £30 for a full clip and charged me £10 to do legs, pull mane and pull tail. She is local and was doing several others on the yard at the same time.
 
I think it costs about £25 or £30 to have a part or full cliip but the trouble is the cost of someone getting to you their time and blade sharpening etc stays the same.

By the time you pay someone £25 three or four times - you could buy your own clippers and do it yourself :)

Try 10 or 12 times if you want a decent set. Like anything else you get what you pay for with cheap clippers, and you have to also factor in blade wear.

I stopped selling clippers because there was absolutely no margin to speak of in them.

Rubbish! I have brought 2nd hand Wolseley clippers off Ebay last year for £100, I also have heavy duty cordless ones for £130 (2nd hand) both sets are great came with sharpened blades and are still working really well this year.

Yes, you have to factor in blades and sharpening but I think you could buy your own good quality clippers for about £100 (2nd hand) and they would pay for themselves within a year.

The thing is that not everyone has the confidence to buy 2nd hand. You get little in the way of a guarantee if they fail a couple of months down the line - You didn't make the prices you were quoting as 2nd hand in your previous post as you will not get a decent (new) set of mains clippers (with an 80+watt motor) for £100.

I stopped selling clippers because when postage and VAT were taken into account, I was making about £20-£25 on a new set of £250 ones.

Sure I could have got them on Ebay and then resold them for a bigger margin than from the distributor/manufacturer, but I would have expected a load back for mending!
 
Thanks for replys, I have thought of buying my own and learning how to do it myself but as its mainly feathers i need doing due to mud fever and mites etc I didnt think it was worth it but if I have to pay about 25 each time I may rethink!

Agree with this about 10 or 12 times. I paid over 300 for mine, so 10 times at paying someone to do it at 30 quid a go. I run a clipping service though so paid for the clippers quite quickly :)
 
I would expect to pay someone £30.00 to £40.00 to come out and do anything, obviously a discount if they come to do more than one horse.

I used to pay £35.00 3 years ago for a trace clip, then I bought my own clippers, and apart from saving by doing it myself, I also made £30.00 for clipping a friends horse.
 
People I know who do clipping charge £25 for a full clip so I'd say it was expensive. For feathers and a general tidy up I'd expect to pay more like £15.
 
It seems reasonable to me. I clip my own horse most of the time but doing feathers and hogging him absolutely kills the blades and sharpening costs about £15 for one set of blades! If you have a really hairy horse then sharpening costs are quite high.
 
I think it's a little expensive, I do alot of clipping for clients and only charge 25 pound for a full clip including travel if within 1/4hr distance.

For legs only I'd charge 10 pounds and a fiver travel. It's not going to take longer than an hour to clip legs off, However legs clipped out badly look terrible so remember you are also paying someone for the quality for the job as well as the use of their clippers and time. Good Luck!
 
mitey legs are the worst to clip and high risk of chipping the blades! EJW do you not cost in your commercial liability insurance, your 3c policy,, the servicing and pat testing of your machines and blades wear and tear,, your travel time and distance(and the added expense to your car insurance policy), your time to clip said legs, or full! you can come and clip my lot at 25 per time! will even chuck in d, b&b.!!!!
