Is this fair? - liveries

I have just taken on a livery who has two horses. I have provided two stables (with rubber mats) and a 2 acre field (post and rail) exclusively for their use. Haynets will be replaced in the morning and water topped up when they are in and I will turn out at lunchtime (to save owners coming up in morning). I will be charging £15 pw per horse. There is a sandschool 50 yards away for use free of charge. On the downside there is no electricity (we use re-chargeable lights) and the water is from Polycons (rainwater). I poo pick every two days and arrange muck removal in with the price. I have provided space in the barn for hay storage and space in the tack room. We are in N. Devon. Doe's this sound fair?
 
That sounds VERY cheap. Are you mad?

Way too cheap.You are in effect providing assisted diy with ablib hay for £15 a week.I would charge at least another £10 per week per horse.But do you want another two horses on livery.For that price they will be queing up.
 
hell yes!! you want to move closer to me and i will rent a stable!! i pay £17.50 p/w for that i get turnout in various fields(depends on your horse!!) stable, tack room, use of paddock and horsewalker. no extras like turnout and haynets putting in!! if i want that doing have to pay extra!! we have electic and running water as YO live on site!! no poo picking for us though!! the YO sorts this out by harrowing etc!! and he sorts the muck heap out as well!!

Sounds far too cheap. When I was on DIY 5 years ago,it was £25 per week per horse, electricity in the winter was £10 per month extra, we had to do our own poo picking.
 
Ah you are all too kind. Thing is, I do rally care about the gee gees and want them all to be happy. I love to go on the yard in the morning and see happy horseys that welcome me! xx

Working with horses for the love of it is all well and good, but at the end of the day, you have a life to run (and fund!)of your own .

Few will become millionaires working with horses, but that certainly doesn't mean you need to sell yourself short.

I'm sure you'd like to think you won't be a moneypit for too long - but giving away livery like this certainly will hinder things!

Yeah but don't forget I have no running water (well I do via a ploycon) and no electricity. I was at a livery with both and only paid £15 a week although the grazing was dire. My grazing is good and fencing second to none but I do still make a profit. It cost me nothing except time and to be honest it only takes 15 mins to put in hay and water and make sure all ok. I have a paddock available with jumps and hay and haylage for sale at slightly over cost. I had the person concerned free of charge last year and this is the first year I have charged money. I work full time and the livery money will pay for my horseys less shoes so am quite happy with my lot. xxxxxxxxxxxx
 
Sounds a real bargain! In fact, even if it was £20 to cover the fact that there's no electricity (most DIYs around here are £25; rainwater doesn't bother me) it would still be a great price but you'd be getting a bit extra a week

Are you mad?

It will take you more than 2 hours to poo pick and do all that - so you are paying yourself below minimum wage and getting zip.

Forget it - sell stuff on eBay, less work & more money
 
sounds very very fair to me... gosh. you are selling yourself far too cheap. if you didn't do the poo-picking, i'd say £25 a week each, tbh. turning out used to be £1 a day per horse when i kept mine at livery, + £20 a week each basic - i.e. stable and field, plus everything else - and that was 15 years ago!
 
just beware that this doesn't get taken for granted, though. i was the same when i had liveries, until 3 of them didn't turn up 3 days running in winter, leaving me to do the lot plus my own, because they knew i'd do it if they didn't. try to make a few ground rules, or get them to do yours occasionally in exchange, or something, maybe?
 
Actually, considering that there is no electricity and running water, it seems fair.


After all, how many gallons can you store? What happens when you hit a dry spell?
 
I pay £22.50 per week (£90 per month) for a 2 acre field. NO stablings, NO hay, NO menage, NO turnout (she is out 24/7) We do have running water and electricity, locked tack room, locked rug room and feed room. Only enough storage for about 25 bales of hay each.

Yours is damn cheap, I wish I could get that sort of deal around here
