My Warmblood/TB mare had an injury 3 weeks ago and is told it might be 3 months before she comes sound, injury totally cleaned up etc.. (No treatment needed)
However because she is going to be in no work at all till probably next year some time now. I was thinking of maybe loaning her out over the winter so she could live out 24/7, at my yard this is impossible and i am unable to give her 24:7 at my new yard.
Is this fair? Or is this the easy way out?
Just when she has no work and is stabled for most of the winter which she will be here she gets very uptight and excitable to say the least.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

what are her views on weather, if she doesnt mind being out in all weather, why not just move yards now?
If shes not great in al weathers, is it fair to leave her out?

I honestly would not be loaning her out.. if i need her to be turned out, i would just move yards!

Hello lou.
She don't mind the weather and when rugged and has company doesn't phrase her at all, rarely cold.
Even at my new yard I am unable to leave her out 24:7 as she would have no company and my other horse has to come in. So I didn't really feel it served much purpose.
Its just recently she becomes very heated when stabled with no work and I don't feel this is fair.
Thankyou for your opinion, I didn't really think loaning her out would be the best option anyway.
Maybe find another yard suitable? And do 2 trips a day?

I can't imagine that there would be many people who would want to loan a horse which can't be used, to be honest. I think if you feel she should be turned out that you will have to move sooner.

yes personally it probably be best to move her to a yard with year round turnout and do two trips. I know how hard it is, my TB has been in all year on box rest.. im winter sick already and its only september!

what about re-hab livery?? there are some yards that specialize in this, or a retirement livery place where she could live out?? just a thought.

I think it would be a bit cheeky TBH.....'here look after my horse over the winter until she gets better and I can ride her'. I can't imagine many people would be interested.....if you were to offer to pay for everything, rent, feed, rugs etc then you might get more takers but personally I would just move yards and look after her myself.
