Hi
i know a horse that tenses its back when you touch it or put rugs on etc, and almost goes to sit down it tenses its back end up so much when you put a rug over.
Just wondering does this sound cold backed, as i dont really think ive ever seen a horse that is cold backed before?

Thanks :)

I think most saddle fitters (including me) and vets feel that there is no such thing as cold backed. It is pain, or remembered pain, which needs addressing. This sounds like a potentially quite serious case - it is usually more about girthing and weight on the back, not simply being touched. I'd want to investigate that horse.

^^^ this. Clearly the horse is in some form of pain and needs checking over.

There is no such thing as a cold back on a horse.

As said it is caused through either tension or remembered pain, as from an ill fitting saddle.

Usually when a horses misalign themselves they 'go out' on either a shoulder or quarter. This is more often countered by 'going out' on the diagonal front/back which then in turn causes tension through the muscles across the horses back.
Realign the horse correctly and there is no tension in the back immediately.

I agree with the above posts, this horse needs to be seen by a Vet or physio to have it's back checked - I wouldn't like to ride it until this has been investigated.

My project horse is a bit 'backy' he had a couple of bad experiences whilst being backed in a previous home.
He's had his back etc checked which is what I would suggest you do.
We lunge literally for two minutes before getting on and this helps him relax.
