she's 5 years old and has never had a foal before, she was bought around 8 months ago and we only recently found out she had spent time with stallions at her old home. quite a few people seem to think she looks like she's in goal but i'm not sure. also she hasn't noticeably been in season but she has been acting quite protective recently, and it's not worms because she was wormed recently. we're going to get the vet down in a couple of weeks but im just wondering what everyone thinks. tia xhttps://twitter.com/smalidisaster/status/877615226480246784

There are more reliable diagnostic tests than polling a forum with mediocre photos y'know ;)

No idea about a foal or not, you could run a worm count just to help rule it out whilst you wait a couple of weeks for the vet,
just chuck 5 or 6 droppings in an examination glove and deliver nice and fresh to the vet lab, then send the photo's onto your vet prior to his/her visit
I just love Chestnut mares and she isn't a wishy washy Chestnut either, such a pleasing colour to the eye, great for grooming too, little effort for a big result

You need to get better pics for us to judge- side on and pics of her udder (if she has developed any?)
Better still, get the vet

Looks in foal to me too. The mare is not overweight (you can actually see her ribs), but the shaape of that belly says foal to me.

Considering she might be in foal she needs to have the feed upped a little. I'd like to see her a little rounder with a little one on the way. Which I'm pretty sure there is.

As an aside, why do so many people just put mates and stallions together when they have no actual plan to breed? I don't get it

Sorry thats totally ridiculous! Is she in foal very much doubt it !!! She is carrying plenty of condition anyhow or are you seeing diferent pictures to me. Why risk tipping the pony over the edge
Theres only one person who can tell the OP if shes in foal,Why? does some posters get so carried away on these threads look at the last one it got onto allsorts including caslicks and the mare looked empty from the start.

Perhaps we are. I suppose we shall see if they ever update us.

It gets rid of any hormonal or seasonal problems in the mare, if you are selling her.

I actually think she is in perfect condition to foal but if she does she will need more grub to feed it as she isnt carrying enough to nurse the foal long term

OP just get a vet out, you won't be wondering any more and some nobody on here can tell you anything for certain. Just get her checked then you'll know one way or the other.

I'm not sure how old op is but I was scared to death when people started saying she looked stitched I was thinking she was going to be giving birth and ripping herself open and I wouldn't know what to do.

Yes, I used to work for a dealer that imported them from Ireland, about 100 years ago. And pregnant mares don't have seasonal behaviour, obviously. :-)

Used also in race mares the hormones actually boost performance. It used to be a well used technique in human athletes as well but you wont get many own up to it. The abortion rates were always high in east Germany and Russia but not exclusive to them.
