It's not great, but for this time of year and given the sheen on its coat not a welfare case IMHO :)

Some eventers don't carry much more than that, although more muscle obviously :)

It is on the 'lean' side clearly but I wouldn't be tooooooo worried with Spring around the corner. I take it someone has taken umbridge to his condition? What's his story?

My mare looks a little bit more weighty than your horse (not by much i must admit) but I think she looks really good :D

Again, more topline and muscle will make a difference which my mare is lacking as well but thats due to the crap weather and lack of riding/ work..... From tomorrow she is back in work and bang on it :D

Why do you ask OP?

Off work for a year,he is an exracer, going to start on him properly next week. Though he did do a few lunge sessions last September.

Been told he is a welfare case!

Show them some pics of a fit fit racer, or a 4* eventer, not much spare flesh on them, some are decidley greyhound like by the end of a season :)

I literally am having everything dug at at the moment! First of all my horse is useless, the next one is ugly, this one is going to be taken by the RSPCA, 3 more to slate now!

Typical ex racer. They are supposed to look like that, especially if they are not in work and muscled up.

The numpty who told you he is a welfare case needs to be informed that thin horses are likely to live longer and healthier lives than fat ones.

Seriously? Someone has actually said that to your face?? I would slap someone so hard there face would be at the back of their head if they ever spoke to me about my horse like that :D

I hope it's not a welfare case, I have an identical horse here, he is out 24/7 recovering from a tendon injury, very similar in condition to yours and in my opinion healthier than being too fat.

With a summer coat I would say the horse just needs topline / muscle.

I always worry a winter coat may hide how skinny a horse really is, the horse in the OP is in no way a welfare case but I would like to see a little more condition.

Our 29yo TB is carrying a bit less than that ATM, but his coat is gorgeous and he still loves a roll in my horses straw stable (29yo lives out 24/7) and I'm not worried, spring is on the way! :)

No he's not a welfare case. Has a good shine on his coat. But difficult to say much about his weight from those photos though.

He is 7, has hay 24/7 plus 10 hours out on grass with hay if wanted ( never eaten) he will eat 3/4 a bale a bale, two big feeds a day of Hifi nuts, speedibeet, And chaff galore. Linseed on order!

Well if they have actually reported this to anybody then they are one of the many people who waste the time of the charities.

Tell them to butt out and stop wasting people's time.

Yes they are right he is a welfare case.....

I.e In this case his welfare is fine :D

Seriously check out the fat score table from the WHW looks like he'd score about a 2.5 due to lack of top line, look at the chart and see how their horses compare, if they are up in the 4 range then they have a lot more to be worrying about than giving you grief about nought!

a bit skinny or quite skinny, but not too skinny and certainly not a welfare case. You're being bullied if someone at your yard is giving you grief. He's a TB, its spring (almost) and you're feeding him; tell them to get a life - or more info on condition scoring.

He's a fair bit fatter than mine :( Hope nobody sees him if they think yours is a welfare case.

Mine's an ex-racer too, he's 19 and basically knackered. Very, very shiny and lively though, so I'm not too worried.

If your horse is happy and has a good coat, then I wouldn't worry too much, as others have said it's springtime soon and he should pick up no problem.
