Hey all :)

Jut wondering if its possible to find a horse that fits this description:

14.2-15.3hh
4yrs-12yrs
unbroken/broken
if broken good to hack/catch/load/live out..
Potential to jump but not essential
pref arab but think thats impossible!
Problem is has to be under £1000 but pref <£500 :(
Pref unbroken but old enough too break..

Is this impossible? Best places to look?

Not impossible at all! I bought my ten year old, 14.3hh, Arab mare for £500 including rugs, bridle and grooming kit;) She is happy to live out, has cross countried and hacked out, and is easy to catch, reasonable to load, etc.
She isn't show quality, as she has a small scar on her flank, also one hoof turns in very slightly. Doesn't affect her.

Keep looking. I found her on Gumtree, of all places, though she was advertised elsewhere. Check Horseabout.com. There was a nice Arab cross on there a few weeks back - Scotland, yearling. £1000.

Good luck!

I'd go for a TB, some can live out fine, mine does

You get a lot of horse for so little money and there are so many looking for a home

I got an ex racer in August as a project and I'm a total TB convert now, I love her to bits

Got her off preloved, also looked at projecthorses

If you're on FB you can also check to see if there are any horse/tack sale groups in your area...

My daughter's pony we picked up via Adtrader online... He was an absolute steal - I'm guessing because they declared he had some sweet itch in the advert and no one but us bothered phoning about him... They genuinely were more interested in a potential home than money though so hadn't priced him very high...

Without knowing (or wanting to know) your personal circumstances I may be way off here... but if you can't afford the extra 500-1000 to buy a horse above the price range you've stated (and not that there aren't plenty within your range) what would you do if presented with a horse suddenly requiring emergency veterinary treatment (which could easily cost you more that the horse)?

If the answer isn't that either you are sure you'll always be able to afford the insurance premiums and excess on insurance (plus full treatment costs for any exclusions) or that you'd be happy to have your horse PTS because you couldn't afford to treat it then perhaps you should re-think buying.

Loaning and sharing are fun and rewarding... without the huge liability.

If you go to race yards they often have youngsters that have not made the grade. A friend of mine only ever used to pay between £500 and £800 for them pretty much staright off the track. Theyw ill be broken but would need to be re-schooled but generally this is the only reason why they are cheaper than something from a private sale. However there are quite a lot of cheap ones about at the moment as are struggling to sell. People are also open to offers more than they previously were. I bought my 3yo TB mare for £1000 last year and she was advertised for £1500 but she has been g=hard work but well worth it now she is broken and settled in.

Tickles- i can easily afford to pay for a horse and insurance etc and my boys currently on loan. I just dont gave enough spare cash to save up to get more than that

I can see where your coming from here but surely if you just waited an extra couple of months you could have saved the money you would have spent on owning a horse in those months to increase your budget. I would estimate all in all I spend £400 a month of my horse and horse related products. If you say waited 3 months you could have another £1000-£1500 to spend.

Failing that try you local sales, can pick up decent horses for not much there, but take someone experienced at sales with you.

Well I had one advertised at £750 with tack, fits above exept he's not an arab. Taken him off the market because of some people's attitude towards me because I required a quick sale, others wanting a 100% bombproof schooled 7YO for £750, and arseh**s wanting to beg something for nothing. Gave up. I'll bring him on myself and sell him for four times as much in the summer. Or keep him, who knows.
