Yes terriers of every type can be docked.

However the law is a strange one as they must be docked before five days old but proof must be given that the dogs are for working by the ‘owner’ of the dog. At this time this would obviously be the breeder, as it’s illegal to sell puppies before 8 weeks old in the UK. So the breeder can dock the whole litter on the pretence the puppies or parents of the puppies are working dogs.

I guess a good breeder would have homes for the puppies before they are born and know which are going to be working or pets and dock accordingly.

So yes that is legal, but IMO should a litter of docked terriers be appearing for sale at that age, arguably being promoted as more of a pet? No.

ETA: I am not against docking of puppies going to a fully working home. I have seen horrific tail injuries in working dogs. Having also witnessed tail docking in puppies under five days old. No animal should go through that unless it’s saving them from future pain.

In England and Wales docked puppies have until 12 weeks of age to be chipped - it’s one of the few exemptions to the normal 8 week thing, and due to how the acts were formed - the newer microchipping legislation couldn’t supersede the existing docking bit or somesuch.

Our patterdale/JRT ((Jack Ratterdale 😂) was the only one of her litter to escape docking. The breeder is a friend, her husband is a gamekeeper and the pups were bred with working in mind. I had my name down for one as soon as her lovely bitch was confirmed pregnant. We then got the call - she gave birth overnight, they are being docked tomorrow - cue mad 2 hr dash at 9pm at night to choose a little squeaker before the dreaded happened to her.
The vet practice where I work won't do it on ethical grounds, working lines or not.
ETA - the "rescued" tail has proved to be extremely waggy and expressive🥰

How did you choose her? was it solely on her markings?

We have Labs so they keep their tail, unfortunately both of ours suffer with split tails! And my white walls suffer with the spray 🥲

At least three practices in this area won't dock except on medical grounds due to injury or infection. I asked the practice I use why they made that decision and they said that they found that the vast majority of breeders didn't have buyers lined up in advance, so how could they be sure that they were all going to end up in working homes. I thought it was a very good point, and would have made it very difficult for the practice to argue that it was working completely within the law.

Oh my life consists of wiping go faster stripes off the walls. Tawny had her tail docked (lab) as a two year old. Scout just paints the walls after every day shooting. We now Terramycin spray his tail and strap a sock on after every work day.
I have no problem with not whole litter docking, but please don’t make the adults suffer for a year ( I changed vets in the end) before fixing a dead and rotten tail end.

I dock all mine - done with a correct tools and local anaesthtic the pups make no noise and there is no blood. I'd rather they were done by a vet than the owner! I've got a litter on the ground now, all presold to working (trialling) homes prior to the breeding and the "spare" was sold within 48h of birth. Good breeders who have homes lined up do exist.

It drives me mad! And the pup is in her first season so it's abit of a war zone in our house!
Just resigned to the fact we won't have nice things!

We chose her because she was one of two bitches, a tri colour and a black and tan. We had two older boys at the time (just sadly lost one of them 😔) and we wanted a girl as we thought she'd be a better dynamic. We chose the black and tan as she was a less usual JRT colour, and our last JRT was tri. As an adult she turned out to have THE longest legs - we still see one of her brothers and her mum and they can virtually walk underneath her!

Our Cocker stud dog sired a litter this year for the Police, and the pups were docked by their request. Pups will be trained to find electronics, ie hidden SIM cards.

That's reasonable, i think, as long as you accept using dogs for work (I do at the moment)? If they're looking for evidence, you can't have the back end sweeping stuff around while they do it.

I do understand the docking argument to an extent. What I will never understand is the deal I had all lined up to take 2 JRT unborn pups (from a long legged mother Errin :) ) and give them a fabulous country home. I casually said I wanted them undocked and the breeder refused to sell them to me!

I have parson Russell terriers and even though they are a breed that were historically docked, ours have full tails and I can't imagine them without full tails.
The bitch we had , had a medium length tail, never sure whether it had been trimmed by the breeder or not.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread! But @Clodagh how do you keep the sock attached?! She keeps wagging any bandages off 😂 😂
